Kelly's best class ever was 2013, ranked #5. This year we are ranked 6 or 7, without full consideration of transfers. His average class at ND was ranked 13. I think he's doing a great job and should get even better as he develops local relationships.

What is it based on points (if you’re using 247)?

On the road and can’t look at the detail right now but interested to see if that changes anything.

Imagine if he coached at LSU the last 10 years. He would have several #1 classes

What’s this classes highest ranking regardless of service or if you use composite?

He’s going to pretty much lock down LA sooner than later. He’s building relationships with HS coaches that are critical. Will always lose a kid or two who just wants to leave the state but he will get the overwhelming majority from now on.

And he’s really not known for being a tireless recruiter

He’s a closer more than anything

Guys like Wilson are the ones that do the groundwork. Kelly knew that.

I'm curious how many of those recruits perform as expected. How many are still with the team three years later. It seems like LSU under Ed and Les has a lot of attrition.

I hope he does great in recruiting kids, but in the age of the transfer portal and NIL, recruiting has been demolished. Just look at aTm. Recruiting has turned into retention. Odd time for college football.

I'm just curious how Ricks pans out at Alabama. Is he going to be a Patrick Surtain type or Denver Harris where he looks to leave after 1 year?

Will be interesting.

I’m much the same. I think CBK and staff are doing a tremendous job on the trail, BUT I think they’re doing just as well at home. Player retention under Leslie wasn’t spectacular, thinking of all the years we had players go to the draft and go undrafted. Meanwhile the dwarf to the East took the same 4/5 stars and re recruited them back to be a key player and go very high in the following draft. Not even going to waste the words on Ed’s retention. Lots of words to say if CBK continues to recruit like he did and is this year, and is able to hang on to those borderline guys, it could be special baws. GDT’s.

I thought ND couldn't recruit with the big boys? How'd he get a top 5 class with all the so called restrictions?

ND recruited very well with BK all things considering

bk just never found an elite game changing QB - which is a requirement for winning a title, generally speaking

he hates recruiting though..but that's because of the travel. at LSU, he obviously has a lot more neighboring talent so less demand to recruit nationally

This can't be overstated - great coaches recruit their draft and transfer eligible players first. Look at how Saban has gotten guys to return - Kelly is doing the same thing here at LSU for the first time in years. Boutte is coming back, JD is coming back - huge.

Did Brian tell you this? I’m impressed that you have such inside info about his feelings, likes and dislikes.

Please post more often about his thought processes related to player decisions and recruits.

Super excited to have someone so close to Coach Kelly posting here!

He’s doing pretty well for a guy who doesn’t like recruiting. Hell this class is every bit as good or better than any that the greatest recruiter ever, Ed Orgeron, evert signed.

As far as being a closer, I’m damn glad he is bc I got sick of Orgerons boys posting here how we were gonna get everyone only to have signing days end being a huge thud, typically missing on big out of state targets and failing to produce any meaningful flips

Kelly did incredibly well and will only continue to lock down Louisiana similar to how Saban did as he repairs and rebuilds relationships that were neglected by our “tireless recruiter”

College Football recruiting at LSU boils down to how well you can recruit nationally for Quarterbacks and Offensive Linemen as Louisiana tends to produce fewer D1 prospects for as good as Louisiana high school football is compared with Texas, Oklahoma, etc(Arch and Holstein are outliers). So far, so good as they locked up a great OL class and seem to have the QB room in it's best position ever.

Ed O's best recruit ever was probably Joe Burrow and we know how that came to pass and turn out, but couldn't seem to crack the OL pool.

WRs, CBs and to some extent RBs flow aplenty from Louisiana's crop every year.

I'm still concerned about our ability to recruit Linebackers. I know that we got Perkins and he is terrific, but LSU still needs a thumper in the middle that can run from sideline to sideline like Devin White or Patrick Queen. Also concerning is that we didn't sign any DL or Nose types. We'll see how that progresses......
