They aren't saying anyone else is throwing around this kind of money.

Exactly. If he can push this across the finish line this year and make a run in the tourney it will only boost LSU's name for recruiting next year.

I’m not buying $7mm. That’s more than we are paying anyone on the football roster. More than we are paying Sam Levitt.

I could see $3mm.

This is worded horribly

Did he turn down a $7m offer (from somewhere else) and is coming to play for WW?

Or did he turn down a $7m offer from WW?

I doubt it's the latter bc we aren't offering $7m for a 1 year rental.

And it's his first year after being hired after the season was over, just trying to fill a roster as best he can. I'm sure he's already recruiting for next year and we'll be in a better position with a lot of players.

All it takes is one random guy to tweet out that LSU offered $7 million for somebody and then a bunch of other random accounts do it. Next thing you know a few local and national media guys post about LSU reportedly paying $7 million for somebody. No real sources. No actual information. But everyone gets their clicks.

I get that. However, for better or worse, the entire landscape of college sports have changed. Especially college basketball. Currently there appears to be a loophole in the regulations that allow pro players from international leagues to play NCAA basketball. NCAA teams are basically "one year teams" with significant roster turnover after each season. If a coach is going to have to put together a "one year" team, then why not try to put together the best roster he can? International players a commonplace now in the NBA. Arguably, they are better coached/developed compared to US peers at ages 18-20

quote:

I think the hardest part is just adjusting to the type of game played in NCAA vs. what they are used to in euro leagues; its definitely different, but we are getting some really talented guys so far, so that transition is a bit easier than say a guy like Ron Zipper.

Once again, McMahon sucked. His 4 year record was awful. That has to be taken into context with ANY personnel decisions he made because none of them produced results. It is entirely possible Zipper would have been a much more productive player under a different coach. Who knows? You've opined, without any factual support, that the reason Zipper didn't play much at LSU is because he was a poor defender. Maybe that is true. However we just don't know for sure, and I'm not going to hold any player who played under McMahon to a high standard.

Plus, Zipper played in the Israeli pro league. Wade is signing players from teams in what is considered the best and strongest international pro league. The talent and competition level between the Euroleague and Israeli pro league is significant. That's not to guarantee they will come in and dominate college basketball. But players from the Euroleage should be much better prepared to play against NCAA teams.

Two things can be true:

1. WW is legally exploiting the loose recruiting rules in a way that will help LSU win games.
2. It’s not as fun cheering for a bunch of mid-20s foreign mercenaries as it is guys like Skylar Mays, Javonte Smart, Darius Days, etc.

Acknowledging #2 doesn’t make anyone less of a fan. It’s just the sad state of college sports right now. I’m fine with Wade exploiting it temporarily but I hope some serious guardrails are put in place so it doesn’t ruin the sport.

I wouldn’t get all butt hurt over dollar amounts. That’s not really our problem any way. I’m more focused on who he is targeting and trying to get here.

But I guarantee you the people that cover Euro League every year know more about than either of us. And that is where most of these reports are coming from.

I edited it. I was trying to avoid the horribly long thread title. Also it said in the post he turned down WW. But fair enough.

So far we have supposedly offered 7 mill to three or four players - Montero, Biberovic, Dessert, and Niang. I doubt we had 7 mill for all four but maybe he was planning on spending 7 mil on one or two? if the NIL pot is less than 25 mil it might not make sense. But if the pot is 25 mil plus it could make sense to have one or two guys making 5-7mil.

There is no way we offered dessert 7 million. Niang seems likely though.

lol...why?

The whole point is to win, no?

It's not 1978 anymore and we're all pulling for guys from New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Alexandria on the team.

As long as "LSU" is winning - I don't care if WW pays martians to play.

Wade Will always do well with the local players. This strategy seems temporary. To be honest if I was Jay Johnson I'd be thinking about something similiar in say, Japan or Venezuela.

if we have to pay a bunch of lithuanians to win, so be it. I think its more fun to win with local funny characters like big baby
