. The O l needs more help at this point than DL

What gives you the impression that LSU can afford to move a starter on the offensive line to defense just for depth?
Did you watch the offensive last year? They need all the help they can get.

Don't forget Ray Parker at OT

Good point. I’m not sure that Hines is a starter if Ingram comes back. I would think it would be Ingram and Lewis. But Hines would likely be first man off the bench. And he wouldn’t start on d-line over Lawrence or Fehoko. Whatever they decide, they need to pick a spot for him and develop him there, rather than move the kid back and forth.

Good point. I’m not sure that Hines is a starter if Ingram comes back.
However, I will say this... any move has to wait until Ingram spends a week or so in camp if he returns. We have no idea what shape he will be in. You can't really regress as a SEC lineman physically and quickly make up that ground.
So the decision isn't based on this recruiting class, or even IF Ingram will be back. It's based on IF Ingram is back AND physically where he left off.
Hines did damn good last year considering so he has a real future as a IL if he wants it. He'll be in the rotation on DL. So the D is the faster path to the field (making assumptions about Ingram). However, I'm certain he'll be a starter at OG one day. I'm not so certain about that on the DL simply because of future recruiting.
Put it this way, Hines is a future stud IL to me; he's a good DL (to me).

Our guards weren't much of a problem last year.
Well LG kinda sucked between Brumfield and Hines, Cush and Lewis were solid to good though.

Hines can be an All-conference caliber OG. Loved what I saw from him this year, and he wasn't even 100% some of the time.
I don't see the same ceiling at DL.
I would only consider it if desperate. LSU will be fine on Dline next year.
2020 is the issue.

I'm not saying he cant be, but he was one of the lowest graded offensive linemen this year and needed a ton of help (not to be unexpected for a freshman though). He's got the physical aspect of things for sure though.

Absolutely not. We are plenty deep at NT which is the position Hines would play on defense and he had flashes of becoming a star at gaurd on offense. He will start at LG this year on offense if he’s healthy.

We are offensive guard rich
Not really.
G
Adrian Magee 6-4 335 sr
------Kardell Thomas 6-3 340 fr
Donavaughn Campbell 6-4 335 jr
C
Lloyd Cushenberry 6-3 320 jr
Cole Smith 6-4 295 fr
G
Damien Lewis 6-2 320 sr
Chasen Hines 6-3 335 so
------Anthony Bradford 6-4 335 fr
He actually has a chance to start at left guard. Kardell is not a shoo in yet. Hines is more than able as he as already started.
But we are good at DLine
E
Rashard Lawrence 6-3 310 sr
Neil Farrell 6-4 300 jr
————Soni Fanua 6-4 265 jr
------Joseph Evans 6-3 315 fr
(Evans was known to wreck backfields; granted against weaker competition)
NT
Breiden Fehoko 6-3 300 sr
Tyler Shelvin 6-2 340 so
Dominic Livingston 6-3 340 fr
------Siaki Ika 6-3 345 fr
E
Glen Logan 6-4 300 jr
Davin Cotton 6-3 280 fr
Justin Thomas 6-4 270 jr
Nelson Jenkins 6-4 300
Fehoko, Evans and Jenkins can move inside if needed.
However, oguard will be thin in 2020 so need to take Hines away from it. There are only 6 interior ol for three positions. That’s thin.
Also, when is the last time you saw only five OL play all year. Hines will get time at guard

quote:I agree. The point being your top-3 presumably for the 2 OG positions being Kardell, Ingram (or Bradford), and Hines . Just look at the experience in game reps of those 3 as it stands today.

Hines needs to play this year at OG for 2020 for experience sake. If not, that means we'd probably be starting all 3 interior linemen with very little experience to start the year in 2020.
We started 3 OL with very little (or none) experience this year at Div-I level (Deculus, Lewis, Cush).
All one has to do is look at games up to UGA and post-UGA and the performance of the OL to see that experience matters. So does continuity (experience together). At least you'll have Hines, Kardell, and Ingram/Bradford with Smith practicing together with some game reps.

I was glad to see him play at the end of the year last year, but still redshirt.

We have plenty of defensive linemen. Where are y'all getting this weird narrative that we don't have enough? It's bizarre? We are stacked in 2019, and in 2020 we will have 10 veteran interior defensive linemen. I swear I'm not making this up.

Plenty of quantity. Lacking quality.

Offensive line is much more of an issue than defensive line. The defense has played well. Offensive line has been dominated and we cant score point.

Really? Logan and Farrell look very good to me. Shelvin, Cotton, and Jenkins all look like quality guys. Ika? Livingston?

I agree if you can get Ed Ingram back. He fills in at one guard spot and then you have the Juco guy returning. I am excited to see Cam Wire or Dare Rosenthal at LT. One of those guys has to step up and fill that spot. Charles nor Deculus are LT's. Both got owned against Bama and Florida for sure.

I agree Bayou Tiger...LSU has bodies.
What's missing is the All-SEC 1s teamers and 1st round NFLers of year's past.
Maybe Lawrence will have a great year, but I just don't see him going higher than 2nd round.

If Ingram comes back, as somewhat expected, Hines likely will move back to DL. We will be loaded at OG.

A great player and very athletic for the offensive line. I would expect the staff to look at him again on the defensive line. He was recruited to play there.
Respectfully disagree. OL is just as important and he looked like a sure fire stud as a freshman. Guys that can start on either line in the SEC as freshman don’t grow on trees. You don’t mess with that imo. I agree that he would make a very good dlineman though so who knows.
