Get what your saying but look at from a kids point of view. Would you like to be compared to your dad your whole time on campus?

It's not like he would be the first notable legacy in the history of college sports. Also, he just went to UCLA. His dad is an NBA legend because of his time in LA. You don't think the local media in LA would compare him to his dad? Hell, playing at UCLA (or USC) was probably the worst decision he could have made if that was his justification.

I read the article and saw the picture of him playing in a game at UCLA's arena. To all the people who like to complain about the crowds at the PMAC, please notice there was no one in the stands. And this was UCLA.

Shaq can pay his way as walk on. We need the scholarship for better players

I know it’s high school, but I rewatched his highlight reel and he can flat out play. As long as he’s healthy, he’s an absolute take , even if we have to use up a scholarship.

Yea, I don't see the connection to Cooper. You either take him or you don't. Has nothing to do with Cooper.

And if Wade is willing to take a flier on players like Deshawn Thomas, then giving Shareef a chance is a no-brainer.

The issue is that we're working on Wilkinson, who Billy Embody just CB'ed to LSU, and Anselem, who looks like he very well could be ours as soon as he reclassified which he seems certain to do.

Both of them are players rated similarly to O'Neal, and both would be available to play in Game 1 next year in your frontcourt.

If you take both of those guys, you are then one over the limit for next year. You also are sitting on eight frontcourt players and six guards, which is a little bit paint-heavy.

Assumedly that thins out with Emmitt or Watford or both leaving, so maybe you could have a scholarship for O'Neal while still keeping Cooper. Except I would think you might like to find another guard as well.

Cooper is the last scholarship guy on the bench. We have no size, he has size and yet he's still not playing, which is a good indication Wade doesn't see him being a contributor. Seems like O'Neal would have to get his scholarship if he came since he'd be sitting out all of next year.

Wade saw Cooper as a project when he signed him. He’s only a redshirt sophomore. I don’t expect him to be run off. He could leave voluntarily.

How common/accepted a practice is it for a school to recruit someone to play without a scholarship offer? Specifically, for kids of "wealthy" families is this a common occurrence?

it is not legal for football but I believe basketball has looser rules on recruited players to walk on with out counting towards the limits

I just hope he, truly, is cleared, medically.

No kidding, I dont even want to think about how terrible it would be if he had a heart attack or dropped dead during the game.

Change of coaching/offensive styling has hurt Shareef more than his medical conditions. In an up and down, motion-based offense, he will fulfill his recruiting potential. He's not a one-and-done, but he is athletic, long, and can guard multiple positions. If he has any interest in LSU, it's a no-brainer for us.

Boy, that's some project if his second year here he can't get on the floor 100 minutes in the whole season.

Assuming we add Anselem to Ezewiro in this class and neither one are busts, when do you expect Cooper to play?

Ive got a bad feeling about Ezewiro,Hes up to 290 pounds so I'm not so sure how he fits in Will Wades system. Also, when I watched Oak Hill (Cam Thomas and Ezewiro) vs Bishop Gorman (Mwani Wilkinson), he only got 6 minutes the whole game. I will assuume it was matchup based, but still even if you are at one of the top high schools in the country, if you can get more than a couple minutes a game I dont know how we can expect him to be a contributor at LSU

Ezewiro

He is probably another project who could develop in a year or two to become a good player. Hell Wade may get him and redshirt him if he has enough depth just so he can have a year to get conditioning in

I expect you're right, which makes me wonder about taking Shareef.

Let's say the numbers work out and you finish with a signing class that looks like this...

Jalen Cook
Cam Thomas
Bradley Ezewiro
Josh LeBlanc
Mwani Wilkinson
Frank Anselem

And let's say you get to 13 scholarships after you add Shareef to that group by having Watford and Emmitt Williams go pro.

So if that's the case your guard rotation is...

Je'Vonte Smart
Charles Manning
Cam Thomas
Jalen Cook
James Bishop
Andre Hyatt (a swing man, but we'll call him a guard for our purposes)

And your frontcourt rotation is...

Darius Days
Courtese Cooper
Josh LeBlanc
Frank Anselem
Mwani Wilkinson
Bradley Ezewiro

with Shareef sitting out as a transfer/redshirt.

What that means, if Ezewiro is a project who can't help you right away and Cooper is a guy who simply isn't any good, and Shareef can't play because he's a redshirt, is you have four frontcourt guys - one is 6-10 with good size and should be able to play some as a freshman, one who's a transfer you get in December who's 6-7 and basically a 3 who might be able to play some 4, one who's a 6-6 power forward and a legit top-end SEC player, and one who's essentially a freshman version of Marlon Taylor.

I've seen worse, mind you, but I've got to think you'd want to find somebody with some size, 6-8 or above, who can play right away to add to that group.

And to find the scholarship to do that would require sending Cooper packing.

Now - if you only lose one of the two between Watford and Emmitt Williams, you don't need that extra big because the frontcourt is pretty loaded with veteran talent, but in that case you're over by a scholarship.

Either way I don't see how you could take Shareef and keep Cooper. Unless something happens and Cooper starts breaking through by the end of this season, getting some playing time and giving us quality minutes. Maybe that might happen. If it does, then the scenario I presented above could be fine.
