I don't disagree with most of your post but he was bad on 3rd downs last year too, and fair or not, he is one of the highest paid DCs in the country and with that price tag comes the expectation of, at a bare minimum, middle of the road defense. Not one that's near the bottom in almost every defensive statistic there is.

I do think that our defense will look better next year no matter who the DC is, House included, but I really don't think House is the long term answer. To me, Kelly is going to see who is out there and if he can get a top tier DC this year House is gone. If not, House's contract is over after next season so go get someone then.

If House stays though no way we keep both the CB and Safety coaches one or both will have to go and likely trying to get a new d line coach. So in that sense is it worth getting all these new coaches if House stays and is canned next year, or do you just clean the whole damn thing out now?

no way am I defending house, but he had a very, very unlucky year. D-line coach hospitalized and not coaching, starting safety gets a brain tumor, two high rated transfer corners let the team down etc.

frick House, losers make excuses and finish with the worst d ever.

Winners make changes and have at least a serviceable D.

The arse clown made no adjustments

Our defensive players are lost out there. No ball recognition, nothing.

Elijah Robinson would be a hell of a hire at DC. You wanna see the flood gates open up in recruiting… Hire that guy

He’s never called a defense.

This is just wrong. Steeples and Cooks were hired before he even contacted house.

It’s possible, but we don’t know that. They likely went back and forth through his agent on hires and such while he finished his last NFL season.

Cooks did work for Kelly, so that may have made a difference with him. A bad hire, but connections do matter.

I wonder if Cain recommended Steeples since both came out of St Louis. There was no other obvious connection to him.

Idk what's going on with recruiting, but this class is weak compared to the rest of the SEC and we are getting blown out compared to the better teams in the SEC.

Defensive recruiting is an issue right now, for obvious reasons. Offensive recruiting is definitely not.

Steeples was head coach at de Smet. A catholic school in at Louis that won a decent amount while he was there. I’m sure that they met and connected over recruiting while BK was at ND

But we have done precisely ZERO of that stuff this year after the Arkansas game. For me, there is just no way in hell that that’s a coincidence—house didn’t just change his entire defensive philosophy over night. He just straight up did not have guys that could handle those things mentally this year; they couldn’t even handle the most basic stuff, let alone the complicated responsibilities that come along with his preferred playstyle.

If you want to run a complex defense in college football, you have to be a great teacher and have to be able to adjust to your players. You can’t be inflexible and lack creativity.

He also has a read and react style, which is also more difficult for college players. It is difficult to play that way and still play physical and maintain aggression. How many time did we see out guys reacting slowly, waiting for the play to come to them, or looking like they didn’t know where to go?

Part of the reason to move on is to bring in a coach with an aggressive mindset and a scheme that works with the practice time and younger players you have in college football.

Yet another reason to move away from playing a read and react style.

House has been awful as a DC in all but 2 years. 1 came under a DC guru head coach who had better defenses once House left.

House is lazy and doesn’t want to put in the work required to be a college coach. It is why he left UK in the first place to be a position coach in the NFL.

Guy doesn’t have the coaching skill as a strategist to overcome his lack of effort in recruiting. Plain and simple.

It was a bad hire from the go. LSU’s defense was not good last year. It was mediocre but was covered by hitting on actual experiences talent in the portal that deserved to play in the SEC. Fully under House, you see undersized players, bad attitude players and under qualified players (FCS-level) being picked up.

In the end, the talent wasn’t enough to counter LSU further shifting to House’s “defense” which was quite offensive.

Last year it was almost like they didn’t game plan all week, then just made good adjustments at halftime. We basically came from behind all season. I could see

How does this make any sense? The offense has the same strength staff as the defense
