Kai is working a double on vault in practice

Has LSU ever had two doubles on vault before? The rest of the lineup is 1.5 vaults.

Wow!Vault sounds promising!Maybe the girls will find those landings this season.

Did the team have an inter-squad today?

I'm so excited for the meet tomorrow. Hoping for it to be a gamechanger. Also hope they put Kai in the back portion of the lineup if she goes for the double. And maybe Rau in the start/middle. A good lineup, for me, would look like this:

1 ruby
2 rau
3 edwards
4 kai
5 edney
6 kyia

Our vault was one of the most worrying events, but it is definetly looking promising now.

I may be wrong but I think they keep with the full for Kai early on. She is still recovering from ankle issues. They probably keep her vault watered down as it’s still very early in the season. Another side note is Alyona is doing some vaulting. Could potentially see action later on at the back end of the season. I imagine they want a 1.5 from her but I doubt she has much a role on this event till next year. But who knows, she’s dramatically ahead of schedule so nothing would surprise me with her. But getting Rau in the lineup will be big down the road. I don’t think LSU ever had a lineup of all 1.5s and doubles. LSU has never had two DTYs ever! In terms of scoring potential, the ceiling has raised significantly with the addition of Rau and Kai’s future upgrade. It’s still a thin event for us but the 6 up are all very good. I agree Kai will move to the back half of the lineup if she does a double.

Kai and Alyona will likely see some opportunities on beam in the coming weeks. Both will have expanding roles moving forward.

I agree. I say let’s let Kai just do the full for now and upgrade later. Her ankle needs to heal.

Also, I think the issue with LSU is injuries, which has prevented competition for lineup spots in practice. You don’t really have anyone healthy enough to push Dean to get better on bars/beam. There’s no real competition for vault spots like there has been in previous years. I’m always a fan of healthy competition.

Did Rau come in as a walk on or did we have a school? It seems really late to add someone to the team but I like the move as there was a need and are willing to do what it takes to address it. Like Nibbs I haven't heard anyone talk about her until now

She is a walk on. She use to be committed to Rutgers and actually competed at the Elite level at one point. She came to one of our camps during the summer and impressed with her vault. LSU offered her a spot to walk on. She actually is coming in a 1/2 year early.

Nibbs was another walk on that coaches saw her at camp and in training. She showed flashes of big power so we took a chance on her to develop here.

Sarah Edwards was discovered at one of our camps. Showed some big vaulting and upgraded when she came to LSU. It’s worked out pretty well so far. Hoping for the same with Rau

What's up with Emma Kelley? Was she ever committed to LSU?

She was for a few years but was literally injured the entire time, didn’t compete or train much. LSU and her agreed to part ways unless she wanted to walk on. She accepted a full scholarship to Arkansas. Ending up working out for both parties.

Emma has talent but she has ways to go to catch back up where she was before. She isn’t as good as McKenna and IMO isn’t as nearly driven as her sister. She likely doesn’t crack any lineups here with the kids in the past class and next years class. She will have a much better shot to compete at Arkansas.

LSU signee's Haleigh Bryant and Elena Arenas were in attendance tonight for the LSU meet.

LSU has a few commits who will be competing this weekend, so I'll post scores and maybe some videos by the end of the weekend.

Always good to get a win on the road. Kai and Kiya are going to be monsters. I feel for Alyona because these are basic skills and it looks mental at this point. Maybe they go to the drawing board and adjust that routine. The 3 skill combination at the top seems too risky and opens the door for a lot to go wrong. Being off on one skill can ruin it all. She is much better than what we have seen so far and will be crucial for us down the road.

We simply are out of shape on floor. Heavily disagree with coaches forcing double backs into every routine to end it. They already have plenty of difficulty. The end goal is to have Desiderio and Kai in this lineup by the end of the year so the lineup will look different down the road. Edwards did very well competing a double layout her first time.

Nice to see Rau get her feet wet. Her warm ups were much better but experience will go a long way for her. Vault can only get better from here. We have to figure out bars, this event should be scoring better. I think Ruby needs to move up to the #2 slot.

My takeaways from last night’s meet

Vault
Adding Rau is huge. She has the power and amplitude to score well here. The form on all 6 vaults was much better. Just need to start sticking a few.

Bars
I’m not sure what to think here. It’s never good when the highest score is 9.85. Kennedi is doing more muscling this year for some reason, and her swing no longer looks natural. Kai looked a lot better. I think Alyona needs more time and reps. I said all along that she should have not been in the lineup until week 3. That way she’d have a home and an away meet just to see how things go. Also, Kiya needs to be moved down and Ruby needs to be moved up. This lineup order as it currently stands baffles me.

Beam
Kai surprised me, and she may have taken Dean’s spot. Now her routine was not a 9.95 (maybe 9.90) but she showed so much poise under pressure. Kennedi did look good as the anchor. I like this method of score building.

Floor
The gymnasts are out of shape! They do not have enough stamina to do the double backs at the end. What is DD thinking here? We also need Kai here. No buts about it. The juniors are just not good on floor. They’re too inconsistent. The only bright spot on floor continues to be Kiya, and I’m happy she’s the anchor now.

Overall, I think the team lacked confidence and enthusiasm last night. They seemed unsure in a lot of the routines, especially on floor. Auburn is not gonna lay down and let LSU walk all over them next week. And Auburn looked good in their win against Alabama. I can actually see them beating LSU if LSU comes out like they did against Georgia. And keep in mind that Auburn beat LSU once last year. But I think with a good week of focused practice, LSU should come out on fire next week.

Shchennikova's UB composition is completely silly. She simply cannot do her current routine without incurring major form/amplitude/landing deductions.

Just have her do:

Maloney - Pak
Shap 1/2
Stalder - Double Tuck

It's such a no brainer. I don't know what Jay is thinking.

Even more infuriating, Kiya Johnson is still doing unnecessary D skills in her beam routine. Both front tuck AND front aerial? WHY?

That was a heck of an effort to win that meet on beam, and I think there is a lot of growing and confidence they will take from that.

I’m just not sure what has happened to the conditioning program, but this team is not conditioned as past LSU teams have been. We use to have a good reputation there.

I have seen quite a few practices.

Alyona does not look to be mentally ready for competition right now. These are mental mistakes. Missing your foot on the bar on the Maloney which she has done thousands of times. Against Georgia, she rushed and did not have a very good grip going back to the high bar. I also strongly dislike the composition, its too difficult right now. Can she do that routine pretty good? Absolutely, just because she can do it doesn't mean she should. It would be smart to do a more basic routine. There is absolutely no reason she should be doing all this difficulty right now. Her double layout tends to be hit or miss. I have seen. her do some pretty decent ones, when nerves hit that seems to fall apart a bit. Jay would never do a double tuck dismount so good luck with that one.

Edney, Ruby and the juniors have to be better. I can understand the freshmen making mistakes since we rely heavily on them and 2 of them are limited coming off injuries. I had to laugh yesterday in the interview by Durante talking about the team making mistakes and saying there are a lot of freshmen, but the freshmen were the ones leading the team yesterday. With the exception of Alyona, they literally didn't make many if not any mistakes. It was the upperclassmen who made all these mistakes.

I was surprised to hear Durante's remarks on the freshman as well. IMO the Freshman are the leaders this year.Jay's bar lineup needs to be redone. Floor is disappointing and not the LSU standard by any means.

I’m still baffled at how Alyonna scored a 0 on bars by not getting back up there in 30 seconds yet the UGA girl who fell twice did?

The commentators said that she didn't finish her routine within the time frame that is allotted after a fall.

I’m re-watching right now and neither did Vega after her fall.
