The college football transfer portal continues to be very active. In recent days, LSU added a preferred walk on from Oklahoma State while three players from local schools found new homes.
LSU offered a preferred walk on to defensive tackle Preston Hickey. The 6-foot-1, 300-pound St. Paul’s product spent last season at Oklahoma State as a preferred walk on after rejecting an identical offer from Alabama as a true freshman in 2022.
Hickey, a former All-State performer, joins his former St. Paul’s teammate at LSU, tight end Jack Mashburn.
As a senior in 2021, Hickey turned into a receiver in an important win over rival Mandeville. Trailing 14-7 during a key drive, St. Paul’s quarterback Grant Billson lofted a seven-yard touchdown pass to Hickey who was lined up as a blocker and eligible receiver. Hickey made the catch with 46 ticks remaining in regulation. St. Paul’s won in overtime, 21-20.
Hickey, who models his game after another former LSU defensive tackle, longtime Buffalo Bills star Kyle Williams, runs a sub-5.00forty, squats 525 pounds and bench presses 405. He recorded 109 tackles with 28 for loss and seven sacks while at St. Paul’s. Hickey will get a look at nose tackle with the Tigers during

He is always gonna be a walk on.

Good walk ons help set the culture and can provide a lot of valuable scout team reps. You need guys like this in the locker room. One of the failings of Ed O was to put little effort into building a walk on program that was worth a damn.

Is there a limit to #s of walkons?

Actually, I think Ed O did more in this regard than Les Miles did. Whether that was O’s doing or him letting Aranda run the team is yet to be seen, but Josh Willliams, Jared Small, and Jack Mashburn are all Ed O walk-one.

Looks kind of small in that last picture. He will definitely have to put some weight on.

He will never be ready in time

Nope, under Frost at Nebraska there were stories of him having like 140-150 players on the team with multiple scrimmages going on at once. Had almost as many walk ons as scholarship players.
On game days though it's limited the number of players who can actually dress.

Not saying that's not true as many coaches break rules nearly impossible to be caught at, but the rules state 125 active players on a roster. Used to be 85/105 but it appears to be 85/125 currently. Most schools never hit the 125.

Any kid with some physicality that is 300 lbs and runs a sub 5.00 forty should be given a roster spot.
