Clark Barrington OG/OT RS-JR 6-6 305 BYU
I would argue that this is exactly the type guy the Staff looks at hard.
Extensive starting experience with position versatility and above average production. Pretty good chance he wants to get polished up for the NFL and pick up a nice bag doing it.

"He was named to three All-American teams in 2021.
He started every game at left guard for the Cougars this season.
Per PFF, he has only allowed two sacks in 40 games started."

Is grimes still at Baylor? That might be a landing spot for him.

So far, he still is. Have to wonder if he wants to be a HC at this point.
I think I saw a different OL from BYU go there already. Shite.

Well We are pretty solid at Guard for next year, with Frazier, Bradford and Delly. If Heard comes in and is ready to play, that gives you a guy like Emery Jones the ability to be a flexible guy who can play RT and Guard.

If you can get a top shelf quality OL — you get him!!! We went through the season w/o major injuries. That will not happen every year. If we can get this BYU kid, get him!!!
Being a BYU kid probably vouches for his character & ability to fit the “alignment”

Agreed. You can add Martinez to that mix also. This kind of guy would be strength upon strength further bolstering a Unit that was a big question mark entering game one this season.
I believe that CBK is always going to at least look for the biggest fish at any position. If they are already or he/Staff thinks they will become elite, I think LSU offers.

Agreed. Good call on the injury factor.

That is all good, but I think the Portal slots should go to Defense. LSU's top 7 OL are back (When you include Martinez who played well at Center vs. UAB). Yes, Wire, Dumerville and Hill hit the portal. But Kimo and Bordelon are back so that is 9 scholarship guys. LSU is signing 4 tommorrow to get to 13 and Thomas and Shorts (Covid year) can both come back, that is 15 OL on Scholarship. To me 15 is the number you want. LSU can still find another OL if they need to say if Thomas goes to the Portal, but they can do that later.

My view, load up on plug and play guys on Defense. LSU could use a veteran Inside LB if they can find one and a veteran CB or 2, and maybe a Safety. To me those are the portal guys I would be going for first. The OL is, relatively speaking in solid shape.

Don’t teams have unlimited “portal slots” for the next two years? I thought the rule for the next two seasons was you could sign as many HS kids and take as many transfers as you want as long as your total is at 85 scholarships.

Yes, but it's a balancing act. You don't really want to go add transfers with 1 or 2 years remaining if you don't have to. Especially if they're not going to make you better or get significant time. The worst thing to do is add a guy for 1 year and have him leave and also have a younger guy at the same position leave because he was in a crowded position group.

No Hard Cap is the only thing. 85 is the number. What I mean by portal slots is that LSU already has 25 HS commits. They are likely going to sign a few more. The number Kelly hints at is 35 at least. Even if Austin does not sign, they are likely to get a TE committed to Vandy according to Shea, to get you back to 25. If Ricks signs that is 26. So if Kelly's number is 35, you have 26 HS commits and already 4 Portal guys, that is 30 guys.

So what are the needs for next year? My view, those other 5 slots could be better used on the Defensive side of the ball at LB, CB and Safety. In fact, I would like another DL maybe 2 that can play the positions that Roy and Mingo play. UGA runs a 3-4, like LSU, and they rotated 9-10 guys on their front 3 vs. LSU in the SEC title game.

That sounds great but I don’t want to run off a great 3 year player or two in favor of a one year rental when you don’t have to.

We have the luxury of not having to chase offensive linemen in the portal. This isn’t Madden you can’t just chase talent without any concept of roster management.

It’s a new era boys. Keeping your guys happy is just as important as chasing talent.

It isn’t that simple. You’re not getting a top shelf OL unless you assure him of a roster spot. When you already really like your starting group and they’re basically all underclassmen, it’s probably not worth it to guess on a guy you’ve never had in your building.

I’m curious—since you think it’s such an easy decision, which starter do you shove out the door? And so that we’re clear, why don’t you name your specific list of OL worth shoving that guy out the door?

These guys are still stuck in 2010. They think the portal only works one way apparently.
