It’s a plan of necessity... Make no mistake, we are limping across the finish line yet again
Silly this got down voted. It's extremely obvious the number of scholarships for transfers going up is because we've missed on people and isn't some genius plan. If we got who we wanted this recruiting cycle we'd have zero room for a transfer, same as last year.

But we had huge coaching turnover on both sides of the ball the past month, and none of these new guys had built any relationships at a with the guys we’re going after, so the long shots got even longer. I just don’t think we can use this finish tomorrow as a big indication of any trend quite yet
Good point

Well no shite Captain Obvious. If you could sign every player you want, no one would take transfers.
In the new age of the transfer portal, it’s a good strategy to sign 20 or so in the early period, hold out for some elite players and fill the holes with transfers.
If there are no transfers you want, roll them over to next year.

This.
It seems like people are really overlooking the benefits of having those extra spots for early enrollees next year, in the “worst case” scenario.
There will continue to be top-tier players who chose not to sign during the early period - these are the guys you simply have to hold a spot open for if you’re still in the hunt. Which means that every year, we see some “decommits” as we run out of room and try to figure out how many spots to keep open. Having a couple of extra spots makes a HUGE difference to your flexibility on that front.
Then you add in the surge in transfers, and it starts to look a lot smarter to keep rolling a couple of spots out each year. Ideally taking 24-26 players every year (including transfers) with the ability to take 27 or so if you get all of the guys you’re targeting.
Now, I’m not saying this was the plan all along or anything. I’m sure they’d have rather gotten Leigh, BTJ, etc. and had a full class. But I have zero issues with them holding spots and rolling them to the ‘22 class instead of reaching for the sake of signing 25 freshmen.

Top 5 recruiting class is limping?
Yes, we are limping at the end of another recruiting class, or call it not finishing strong. Anyone can limp, including top college football programs, Nick Saban limps when he sprains his ankle, and I am sure Mark Cuban and Elon Musk both limp when they sprain their's.

NO.... we're not limping to the finish line.
We've got 20 signed and 2 more committed. IF we can get Brian Thomas, who else would you want us to sign?
We have 15 or 16 OL on scholarship going into spring. That's the perfect number. 3 deep across the board.
In the transfer portal there are hundreds of players who have COLLEGE experience, COLLEGE film to look at, vs the high school prospects.
We will likely sign 5 or 6 OL in the 2022 class.
Holding 3 scholarships (if you can't sign elite prospects) for a later time is a great strategy. You never know what you'll lose after or during spring .... AND ...
Those Tennessee LB's have at least 2 years of eligibility. So, if we signed a 3 star highschool kid that ends up transferring to Nichols after a year or 2 or... we sign one of those TN LB's and he actually plays and contributes.... which one is the better usage of the scholarship.
I'm ok if we sign the California QB.
I also think we may want to add a TE.
The CB Balfour would be a position of need if we can get him.
And a LBer. That's it.
Come on people. Ya'll gotta stop looking for things to whine about. We're returning 20 starters and bringing in a Top 5 class.

I've been saying all along this is the thinnest position on campus.
I don't know if they were holding out hope that Gilbert would stick around or not.
Now that he's gone for sure, I think they need a tight end in the portal. There's a lot of them.

Or we can sign a CB that played at Nicholls.

If finishing in the top 5 is limping across the finish line may we always limp...

Unless there's a plug and play guy in the portal I hope we hold on to those spots for the 2022 class. I think we have a deep LA class for 22' and I'd rather we load up next season than reach for a player that just occupies a roster spot.

Granted that didn't work out...but hey, no guarantee a H.S. signee pans out either...

I agree with this. But we aren't as far off as you make it sound. For some reason you left off UGA's 20 current commits for 2021.
If you take the average over that 6-cycle period for each team it comes out to:
UGA - 24.7
Alabama - 26.5
LSU - 24.8
UGA may not be able to sign 25 this year, if they got to 29 last year by deferring some of the initial counters. Alabama is the head-scratcher.
But yes, it would be nice if we could mimic their "creativity."
