NIL and the transfer portal have ruined the excitement of recruiting for good!

Prior to NIL and the transfer portal, the first Wednesday in February was one of the most exciting days of the year! For a lot of fans, particularly men, National Signing Day was like having an early Christmas and you couldn't wait to see what players had faxed in their paperwork. I can still recall pulling up DandyDon or some other recruiting website several times while at work to see what players we landed and what players we lost! It was fun and it was exciting.
The reality now is National Signing Day is no longer exciting or really that important since the arrival of the transfer portal and NIL. The truth of the matter is about 75-80% of next year's defensive starters at LSU are currently on another team's roster. There's also a very strong likelihood that many current LSU players will also be donning another team's uniform this upcoming fall!
The old adage, "look before you leap," is clearly something the NCAA did not do before carelessly allowing NIL and the transfer portal to absolutely destroy college football. I guess this is what you get when you introduce new things with very few guidelines to an already dirty business.
The saddest part of this all is the excitement of recruiting and National Signing Day, with all day coverage on the major sports channels, is gone for good.
The reality is the average football fan probably has a better chance of getting struck by lightning, then watching that newly signed high school 4-5 star recruit walk across the stage to receive a college degree from that same school four years later.

Dandy Don brought me here in 2003. The GOAT of Lsu recruiting. RIP

Let me know if you need directions to the soccer board, friend.

Tl:dr
Then don’t follow it
I’ve been following recruiting since 1995
I still get the same excitement for a 5 star commit as I did when I was a kid and Jerrell Powe announced LSU at the Army AA Bowl

You’re dumb.
It levels the playing field
It levels the playing field

There's a great player from Louisiana up at UGA that just entered the portal. LB by the name of Ratphuc Hobley. Former 5 star in the 2022 class

Without the portal imagine what this team would have been the last two years?
Look there will always be positives and negatives to whatever era we in. It’s not the best version of CFB at this time but NIL and the portal will balance itself out in time and we will likely have a better version of CFB at that point.
You have to make adjustments and adapt to whatever the rules are at the time. As long as we have great leadership at this school called Louisiana State University (LSU) we will stay competitive with the nations best.
We just need the right people in place to see the program get to the level we all want it to be. We have a great HC and offensive staff to allow us to perform at a high level there and now we need to get the right people on the defensive side. I don’t think the portal or NIL will have a major impact on our success if we have those people here.
So let’s do what we can to help our university get those people in place and help them to get the best athletes here by donating whatever you can to the collective we have established. If it’s $10k,$1k, $500, $100, $50 or $5 donate whatever you can whenever you can. If we all do that then we’ll be just fine. We all just have to do it, so do it today, go right now and donate whatever you can.

Nope. It’s far better now than it ever has been. Love NIL and portal!

Yea? Is this the truth?

I totally agree with all this. While I still follow recruiting, NIL and transfer portal has taken much off the fun out of the process and it really sucks having to recruit your own players year after year. Seeing programs like TAMU beat us for players for no reason aside from money is also very discouraging

You must have started following recruiting as an infant.

Powe was class of ‘06.
Flipped to Ole Miss, didn’t grade, ended up back in school, then back to Ole Miss. Did well his last year and made the League.
Then recently….

I remember when LSU got Faulk. That was the biggest recruit ever at the time. I was probably 12 or so.
I probably didn’t get hooked on recruiting until 99 or so. Bradie James comes to mind. West Monroe was so good back then and James was a beast.

The NCAA didn’t “allow” NIL , the Supreme Court did.

This is 100% incorrect.

Although the February signing date was a fun event, it started to become a clown show with all TV exposure these unproven kids were getting. I like the early signing period because you tend to see less due to all the attention on the season and bowl games.
