One of the first things NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders did as the new head football coach at Jackson State was offer one of the most coveted defensive tackle recruits in the country in five-star Maason Smith. The Houma (La.) Terrebonne blue-chipper tells 247Sports he spoke with Sanders on Monday afternoon.

"Just talking to me about changing the culture," Smith said.

"He was saying how they wanted things to change. So to do that they had to takes hard hits and try and start getting quality four- and five-star dudes."

Does Sanders have a chance to do that?

"Yessir, 100 percent," Smith stated.

He's going to take some 3 star kids in MS and LA away from MSU. OM, USM, LA Tech, ULM, ULL, Tulane, just watch.

The program and more importantly the facilities are atrocious . He will be better off shooting a lot lower. One visit and those kids will run.

Does he realize how recruiting works? Those comments seem as if they were spoken from a guy that thinks there are 50 or more 5stars available in each state.

Does he realize a school like lsu is ranked 3 or 4 in recruiting class this year ,without a unanimous 5 star at the moment?

Isn't it an hbcu? Has there conference even pulled a 4star in the last 20 years? I dont even have to ask about 5 stars, hell ,they dont even go to go5 schools unless your the guy that went to houston.

Stingly Sr talked about this on OTB. His perspective was that Primetime would have to prove it as a coach. Right not he's just a flashy name.

I think this just sheds light on Mason's personality and approach to the media. He just isn't going to say anything that reveals where he is signing. He is a Tiger IMO, but nobody is going to be able to get that from his interviews or twitter posts or the like.

Lol any bluechip kid who gets convinced by deion to come to jackson state--and there will, at some point, be some--is going to regret it BIG TIME. Deion was an awesome player and is still an awesome personality, but the fact is that he absolutely, beyond-a-shadow-of-a-doubt does not have what it takes to run a division I football program. This is evidenced by the fact that he's already shown himself to be unable to run a HIGH SCHOOL program. Remember the Prime Academy or whatever it was called? When all those kids didn't pass the NCAA clearinghouse? If they think Deion is going to be any better or more organized at his next stop, they should consider the fact that he was hired by Jackson state, then decided it was more important for him to finish off his current HS season and do his podcast than it was for him to jump in and start his new job now, when they need him.

To sum it up, this was a splash hire, and it made a splash. mission accomplished. But no kid with legitimate NFL aspirations should be entrusting his future to this dude who made his school deny the report that they were considering him so that he could instead announce it on his brand new podcast (which he is not going to stop doing, as far as im aware). This is a guy who fed outright lies to the media about being in final consideration for the FSU job, and claimed to other media members that he turned down multiple SEC HC job offers this past off-season (again, blatant lies).

I fricking LOVED deion as a player and he was hilarious on the CBS NFL pregame show, but the dude is a clown and any player who he tricks into coming to jackson state is gonna regret the frick out of it.

With the way things are going nowadays... With political views on certain issues it’s not out of the realm that Deion can pull these kids in... Along with the coach staff he’s assembling at Jackson St... Times are changing and all you need is one player to make that leap and make that change... He’s going to flip his son who is a 4-Star recruit to Jackson which will lead to other following... The facilities will take care of themselves Deion is signed to Under Armour don’t think for a second that they won’t invest in that school and Deion and his staff can make those changes the pockets are already they financial... Don’t be surprised if he pulls a few in...

And another things the grading to get into HBCU’s aren’t as tough as big schools... If a kid just wants to play ball for instance Zach Evans...

Recruiting skill positions won’t be hard at Jackson St. getting players for the trenches will be the hardest and remain the hardest task... And I’m not saying that because it’s an HBCU more because it’s D2...
