Development was supposed to be a CMM specialty.
And therein lies the problem. You had a HC trying to "develop" players on a timeline that no longer applies in a mid-major manner...at a major conf. school.

He basically retained and developed no FR prospects
Guys now are all now on, in essence, one year deals. That doesn't mean they won't stay. But you have to sign them to new deals each year. And it is difficult to get freshman to buy in to not playing much for 1-2 years when they could simply go elsewhere and play immediately.

This season's team would have been significantly better if V. Miller, Chest, and Givens had been retained.
MANY teams could say they would have been better if they retained good players from the previous year. But that is not the world that really exist any longer. A coach has to be able to build a largely new roster, gel it together, and win with it all in ~10 months...then do it all over again. McMahon never embraced that reality. That's how you win 17 SEC games over the course of 4 years.

Can we get a sticky on this thread before the portal opens?

Kentucky- No number but will be scaling back from the $22 million last year. Will be doing a lot of retention

Next season will be Pope's last in Lexington. Hes in over his head.

There is a new reality for sure, but the best teams are often still retaining talent. The average minutes played by returning players is about 48% for this season's Final Four. While the average for major conferences was about 31%. Also, if you cluster teams by preseason roster strength, the teams with the most returning minutes will almost always have better seasons than comparable teams with fewer returning minutes. Of course, there are always exceptions, but the NIL era data is pretty clear, and player retention still matters.

All these players with multiple years of eligibility left that we had no idea were on LSU’s roster. Not saying these players would’ve moved the needle this past season but heaven forbid McMahon even try anything different.
Instead it was game after game of 25+ minutes for Tamba and Sutton.

ASU putting together an Aussie super-pipeline with Randy Bennett hiring David Patrick so that'll be where Vaughns ends up.

That would be a fantastic pickup

Wilkinson has shown he can put it into the bucket, but the question is can he keep the opposing team from doing it?
It’s still better than just about anyone we’ve had over the past few years, but we need defensive stoppers as much as we need scorers
