In 2026 he had a lower WHIP against lefties than righties. So there is a little bit of reverse split stuff going on to cover for our lack of lefties.
He also had a vastly lower walk rate with guys on base. 2.66 BB/9 with runners on base vs 6.65 BB/9 with bases empty. His highest K/9 split was with RISP, 10.59 K/9. His WHIP with runners on was 1.224, with RISP it was
1.242, both good numbers.
They could just have him throw from the stretch all the time and improve his command.

WIP, 50/50 chance. Has a 97mph fast ball. Time will tell.

I hope we're not done in the portal because this guy looks like potential at best for us. We don't need potential, we have plenty of that. We need reliable arms which killed us.
Went from Paz being potential for us to this guy. You have to replace some of the bullpen arms we used like Cowan. I'm not sure this guy is that he looks like he struggles at times. Similar to Paz he looks to have good stuff that need refinement. Need guys like Moore with good command of their stuff to paint the strike zones. Not necessarily starters, just reliable arms. And we need at least 1 reliable lefty not relying heavily on freshman coming in. Most of the pitchers on the roster this past season regressed.

Because you need more than him to compliment what you lost alongside injuries. The guy from USC is probably someone in relief to replace maybe Cowan. But you're losing a lot and not really filling it outside freshman who you have NO idea what can do.
One of your starters is coming off injury while your other 2 were inconsistent. Not to mention the roster itself wholly regressed almost every pitcher. LSU got obliterated by free passes on the mound and a guy like you're getting here isn't really addressing that problem. Can he develop? Sure, but LSU has a loaded roster of guys like that right now. That was their problem.
That pick up was big and he might end up as a starter but we still need a reliable lefty out of the portal at minimum. I'm sorry but I don't trust this roster right now based on what we saw this past season with pitchers melting in clutch situations all season. 1 big replacement is not really a full replacement for everything you're losing with question marks.
I do like what we did to the infield and I think that's underrated at how much it impacted our pitchers mentally. I'm still a bit nervous relying on Serna/Bide's gloves though as they were also what killed the pitchers mentally. I'm thinking Jay doesn't see the pitchers as the major problem on the roster right now which I definitely can see with how defense played.

So strange how Jay let Milazzo work through his struggles and yet he doesn’t think we need a late-inning, highly skilled defensive catcher nowadays. Tight games have me popping antacid tablets while our catchers struggled last year

People keep referencing Cowan. Cowan was great, but you don’t need a Cowan.
You should expect 3 of the 4 of Hood/Moore/Schmidt/Evans to get you 5 innings a weekend. One of the others can get you 3-5 more. You should have 3, real starters next year. Something VERY few college programs have.
We’ve been over the multitude of reasons the pitching staff struggled last year, a ton of which being the loss of Cooper Moore and the defense. Yeski staffs are going to be high K/high BB. It’s the nature of how he calls pitches and coaches pitchers. When the ball is put in play, the plays have to be made. Last year - they weren’t.
I agree that we’re light on the LHP side. We also don’t know what the draft will bring/take. You also have to remember that you can’t just go get multiple top portal pitchers when you’re bringing back what you’re bringing back.
If the staff is filled with guys who are only on the roster as of today? I’m not really mad at all. Evan’s was not nearly as bad as the numbers suggest and we know what he can be. Schmidt got much better between 25-26. Moore looked good to start the season. Hood is going to be a guy.
Maybe it’s just that I’m generally an optimist with LSU baseball and Jay, but I don’t see the glaring holes others do.

That was also because Neal was hurt. As soon as Travinski it on, Milazzo was out of the lineup.
Also, these guys have to WANT to come here with the intention of rarely hitting and only being a late inning defensive replacement. That’s not a great selling point to many guys. Milazzo was a unicorn who was from LA and had zero pro prospects.

Exactly. I love how people think players out of the portal are going to want to come here to play a couple of innings behind the plate late in games (that we have a lead in) and get maybe 50 at bats on the season.

My other favorite is when people complain about the lack of Sunday starter when there's like 3 good teams in America that actually roll out a true Sunday starter. This year, we should be one of those 3!

Not shallow...and you don't know the competition that each pitcher faced...unless you are trying to say you checked every game's box score they pitched in...try again. That EXCUSE was a total FAIL!

Doesn't seem like it would be that hard to sell you have a chance to be a starter for LSU right now. Probably why they got a big arm out of the portal. Moore you have no idea what he can do because he didn't get a chance in SEC play. Either way, he's highly questionable for that reason and coming off injury. Neither Schmidt or Evans showed consistency enough to be considered an ace. Nobody should be getting guarantees after their performances this past season.
Evans has big stuff but he struggled with commanding it this past season with control. Schmidt has friday stuff as well but I have not been impressed with him mentally in his 2 years at LSU. He struggles when something doesn't go right and feels like he just mentally collapses at times. He showed big improvement so hopefully he can improve his mental fortitude. Evans already proved he can do it so there's that, but he did it in relief not starts.

So you are doubling down on comparing stats between these 2 leagues. Not buying it. The baseball competition between sec and aac is apples and oranges. How many Natty's from that league?
Aside from that, Jay and Yeski both thought Paz was going to be a weekend starter here. Losing Paz is a hit to our staff. I think our coaches would consider your comment to be the fail.

My man it didn’t matter what conference Paz played in. He couldn’t throw a freaking strike if his life depended on it most appearances. Regardless of competition he still sucked.
