I like his skills but it just seems like he’s one of those big men that thinks he needs to be floating outside the 3 point line. Hope he makes a big jump this year.

To be a good rebounder, you have to want to go get the ball. Look at Hannibal. At 6'2 he pulls down an amazing amount of rebounds, because he goes to get them. He averages the same number of rebounds as Fountain at 6'9 per 40 minutes. The problem with Reed is that he plays a little soft, but many bigs take a leap after their freshman year. Fountain is an example. He was much better his sophomore year than his freshman year. He's still not a great rebounder, but he showed a lot of growth, so we can hope that happens with Reed. Reed was better his freshman year than Fountain in his freshman year. Hopefully Reed follows a similar improvement trajectory, gets a little stronger and gets more physical and desire to get the balls next year.

With two scholarships remaining the two biggest needs appear to be bigger guard who is a plus defender or a wing who can score and defend might also be an option.

The big question at this point is the status of the offer to Joe Girard. He gives us scoring and experience but his size and defensive abilities are in question. Given that Stewart and Cook are already on the roster it seems a different type of player is needed. Here are some potential options that would seem worthy to pursue:

*Tyrin Lawrence from Vanderbilt would be an outstanding choice if interested. His size, scoring ability, ballhandling, SEC experience, and defense make him a great fit. He did visit Auburn this past week and his comments regarding the visit indicated he enjoyed it. Kentucky is also reaching out. Hopefully Jordan Wright will continue to use his recruiting skills to put LSU into the equation.

*Jordan Dingle from Penn was the NCAA's 2nd leading scorer and just went in the portal recently. He is a ball-dominant guard and at 6'3" has good size as well. Kentucky reached out immediately when he entered the portal and there will be lots of competition for his services.

*Tanner Holden from Ohio State who had three productive seasons at Wright State where he averaged 20 points and 7 rebounds shooting close to 50% in 2021-2022. He didn't play as much at Ohio State and was caught behind Brice Sensabaugh who in a potential NBA player but could probably helped the team with points and rebounds.

*Anthony Dell'Orso from Campbell is a more "under the radar" possibility coming over from Australia and playing in a one-bid league. However, he has 3 years of eligibility and was the Big South newcomer of the year averaging 12.5 points per game and stands about 6'6". He shot about 49% and grabbed close to 7 rebounds a game.

The other crying need is another player with size. Currently the roster only includes four players taller than 6'6" (Will Baker, Jalen Reed, Derek Fountain, and Corey Chest) and one of them (Chest) is a freshmen so it is uncertain what he will contribute. If an injury occurs then there will be a bigger problem with rebounding and interior defense so this issue must be addressed. Here are some possible options:

*Moussa Cisse, LSU has reached out and he has familiarity with the program. Obviously he's a tremendous defender and moves extremely well for someone his size. Although he probably won't score a high volume his highlight film does show some examples of solid post moves and a fairly smooth jump shot near the basket.

*Isaac Jones from Idaho just entered the portal in the last week. He is a relative unknown but will be in great demand given his performance this past season where he was Big Sky newcomer of the year and averaged 19 points and 8 rebounds. He was 6'5" in high school and had zero scholarship offers, worked at a pipe and supply store for the first year out of high school but also grew 3 inches. He walked on at a community college and now stands 6'9" and is 242 lbs. He is an explosive leaper, can handle the ball and can score in a variety of ways. This would be a great get.

*Daimion Collins from Kentucky just entered the portal last week and will have 2 years of eligibility. He only played 7-8 minutes per game but was stuck behind Oscar Tshiebwe. He was a Parade All-American, has great athleticism and screams potential. He had a rough season losing his father and grandfather and is likely looking to get closer to home. LSU looks to be about a 5 hour drive to where he lived in Texas so could be realistic.

*Aziz Bandaogo from Utah Valley is also a recent portal addition and is a pure center so not sure he and Baker could be on the court together. The Portal Report (TPR) indicates Duke, Cincinnati, Kansas, Vanderbilt, Illinois, and Cal have reached out.

*Parker Braun from Santa Clara recently also entered the portal. He's the older brother of Christian Braun of the Denver Nuggets but taller at 6'10". Spent two years at Missouri and the past two seasons at Santa Clara where he averaged about 8 points and 6 rebounds in 2022-2023 as a starter. He has some ballhandling skills and can shoot the 3-pointer although his percentage was not particularly good this past season from the arc. LSU would have a connection with former teammate Carlos Stewart if there was a desire to go that route.

*Ven-Allen Lubin from Notre Dame has been mentioned previously in this thread and goes about 6'8" and 226 pounds with 3 years of eligibility. He is very athletic and has a great deal of upside. He played about 17 minutes per game as a freshman in the ACC and averaged about 6 points and 4.4 rebounds so could contribute.

We'll be eager to see how McMahon fills these last two spots. The majority of the top 100 transfers on On3 have committed already but there have been some quality late additions to the portal so hope they can add some useful pieces to the roster. Full disclosure that I have no inside information and gathered all this information from a wide variety of sources on the internet. Some of these players have reported which schools have shown interest and some have not. Cisse and Lawrence are the only ones that have indicated interest from LSU.

Papa Kante is a 6'10" C with a 7'4" wingspan. He is a high school recruit who would seem to fit in nicely skill wise.

Just recently decommitted from Michigan.

How long of a timeframe does McMahon have to fill the final spots for next season.

Yes, McMahon will have to explore all options since the number of possibilities has shrunk. Papa Kante could provide a lift as a backup center and potential for the future. Another high school player who recently decommitted from Rutgers is Baye Ndongo

The other intriguing possibility that just entered the portal this morning is Grant Nelson from North Dakota State. He's 6'll" and 235 pounds, averaged about 18 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1.7 blocks per game while shooting 52% from the floor. He is something of a unicorn with really good ballhandling skills and plays largely on the perimeter. He has declared for the NBA draft and could be a late-2nd round choice but does not appear in most mock drafts. However, with a year in the SEC or another larger conference could conceivably boost his draft stock. He has two years of eligibility but it's doubtful that he'll be more than a one year player. Check out his impressive highlights:

Here is some information about the timetable for entering the transfer portal:

What Are the NCAA Basketball Transfer Portal rules?

Hope this helps!

Wow, Nelson looks amazing on those highlights. How is he not showing up on draft boards? I can’t believe that he moves like he does at 6’11” and 235. He looks like a guard!

As much as I would love for him to be a tiger, I highly doubt this is a realistic option. This guy will have his pick on anywhere he wants to go in the country

Grant Nelson was among 100 players invited to the NBA Draft Combine which will take place May 15-21. However, only 58 players will be selected in the two round draft on June 22nd. The last date to withdraw from the draft and maintain college eligibility is June 1st. He will likely attend the Combine and gather feedback from teams regarding areas of improvement and the likelihood of being drafted. With that feedback he'll have to make a decision whether he wants to stay in the draft or head back to college. Some of the weaknesses identified in his game related to the NBA level are his 3-point shooting and ability to guard on the perimeter. He shot 35.6% as a freshmen on a low volume and has declined to to 32.6% as a sophomore and 26.9% as a junior as the number of 3-point attempts increase. He is shooting about 60% from inside the arc. He's also much more effective defensively closer to the rim than when matched up further away from the basket.

Tyrin Lawrence

Haven't really seen anything connecting him to LSU. Looks like he is all Auburn after his visit.

quote:

Jordan Dingle

Looks like Indiana, UK, KU, or Bama

quote:

Tanner Holden

Not a lot out there on Holden other than this is his 2nd transfer in as many years and that he wasn't happy that Ohio State steadily reduced his minutes throughout the season.

quote:

Anthony Dell'Orso

He didn't include LSU in the list of schools that he has heard from and has been in the portal for about a month. He says that Vanderbilt, Xavier and Wake Forest are the schools he is in contact with the most. Lots of Vandy smoke here.

quote:

Moussa Cisse

Not much new on Cisse, but he still lists LSU as a school he is hearing from.

quote:

Isaac Jone

Not much out there on who he is talking with. Was a decent scorer vs lower-level competition but didn't play any defense.

quote:

Daimion Collins

Haven't seen anything linking him to LSU, and it looks like Bama, Houston, Texas, & Kansas are the big players.

quote:

Aziz Bandaogo

Would be a huge pickup defensively. However, haven't seen anything connecting him to LSU and it looks like Duke, UK, and Illinois are the big players here.

quote:

Parker Braun

Not much out there on his contacts or visits.

quote:

Ven-Allen Lubin

Not much out there on who he is talking with, but might be open to coming off the bench since he is a FR transfer with 3 yrs of eligibility left.

As far as I can tell, these are the only players still in the portal that have publically acknowledged contact with LSU:

Joe Girard-Syracuse
Tre White-USC
Moussa Cisse-Oklahoma State
RayQuawndis Mitchell-UMKC

North Dakota State transfer Grant Nelson has heard from these schools since entering the portal, per source:

Kentucky
Gonzaga
Kansas
Alabama
Arizona
Arkansas
Texas Tech
Houston
St. John’s
LSU
UCF
Miami
Florida State
Villanova
Nebraska
Georgetown
Cal
Baylor

Nelson averaged 17.9PPG, 9.3RPG, 2.1APG and 1.7BPG this season. One of the top players in the portal.

Someone give MM the keys to the LSU NIL bunker. Get this dude on campus and run out a lineup of - Cook, Steward, Wright, Nelson, Baker, and dare teams to try and out-score you.

The issue is that while LSU may have an NIL bunker about 6 of those teams on that list have college basketball versions of Fort Knox

No doubt. The reality is that LSU probably will never be a big player in the basketball NIL world.

*According to the Transfer Portal Report (TPR) LSU did reach out to Aziz Bandaogo from Utah Valley who is a 7'0" center that averaged 11.5 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks per game. He also shot 60% from the field. He has been mentioned previously in this thread but would be an amazing addition if McMahon can pull it off. Lots of interest from other high major programs. Pairing him in the floor with Will Baker might be an issue. Baker certainly has the offensive game to play away from the basket but not sure how well he would guard on the perimeter. Bandaogo would drastically impact the game defensively and erase a lot of mistakes on defense.

Bandaogo is who I want.

Put him on the floor with Baker at times, have him play instead of Baker at times, whatever. We've got to have a rim protector and he's about as good as there is in the portal.

I'm sure McMahon will find two more to fill the roster. But I'm not expecting (though hoping) they will be surefire impact players. His horrible first season really put him behind the 8 ball in terms of recruiting. Basically, the only positives he has to "sell" in the transfer market are "home" (i.e. Louisiana) and the play of KJ Williams. That's why the only 4 transfers landed to date are three BR area natives and a big with a skill set similar to that of Williams.

It's likely, if not certain, next year's roster is going to have some major holes. Be that defense, rebounding, depth, what have you. It's unlikely to be a balanced and perfect roster. So it will be up to McMahon to identify the strengths and try to play to them...even if that leaves some of the weaknesses exposed, and even if it is not the ideal style he would like to play. That's kind of what Missouri did this past season. They were a horrible defensive team and it resulted in them getting blown out on more than a few occasions. But they could also run and shoot. So that is what they did every game even though when the shots weren't falling their bad defense was horribly exposed.

Overall though, they had an unexpectedly good season that I'm sure their fans were happy with. It didn't result in a championship and I'm sure Gates doesn't want to be that imbalanced ever again. But, in isolation, they exceeded expectations in hopes of building the program.

Going into next season NO ONE is expecting LSU to be a championship level team, or even a NCAAT team. However, if McMahon can put together a season similar to what Missouri did this past year he will win back a lot of the credibility and benefit of the doubt lost this past season.
