I don't see anyone leaving outside of the 4 running out of eligibility. I also think we have to drop a scholarship since we didn't last year. That leaves us with one spot to sign a veteran center.

The players out of eligibility:
Wright
Hannibal
Baker
Dean

I know some people speculated since before the season that Cook would be 1 and done, but I don't think he leaves after losing so many games to the NCAA and injury. If he were to leave of course we would use the extra spot on a veteran PG.

If anyone else were to leave we would be looking for a small forward / guard to play next to Ward. Wouldn't need to be a senior.

The currently sign players which are in the OP are:
Curtis Givins III (PG)
Robert Miller III (C/PF)

They will almost certainly have someone transfer out. We will have more than 1 spot.

Agreed. I dont think all of cook, collins, wilkinson, and stewart stay. I have no proof, but i think at least 1-2 of these arent injuries as much as sitouts that are waiting to transfer.

Wilkinson is playing, and I am pretty sure they are working on a medical redshirt for Collins at this point.

I think historically the odds might be in your favor to lose 1 or 2. I just hate to speculate it. Also the transfer portal will start drying up a bit as the covid players age out and there is more opportunity for players staying put.

He's always been more of a role player, but it's hard not to root for Mwani. Dude stuck it out when literally nobody else would.

Unfortunately I agree. We definetly need their depth. I expect givens and Williams to be the prime back court.

I imagine Fountain returns.

on3’s Matthew Brune put out a short article last week about Curtis Givens. LINK He visited for the Missouri game.

quote:

“Offensively, Givens is a pure point guard in the modern game. He’s a fluid ball handler who operates ball screens well and has excellent vision. Love the way he probes and changes pace once he gets inside the arc. His ability to use his strength and size and get to the paint is a massive weapon on the court and allows him to shatter defenses, forcing help and drawing the eyes of the defenders. Paint touches is the phrase every coach in America uses and Givens embodies that.

The passing is efficient and he is comfortable with one-handed passes with either hand, allowing him to have more speed to his reads. Really adept at finding the open shooter when he gets downhill. The size also allows him to make cross-court passes to turn the defense quickly.

The finishing is also an area where Givens will be exceptional at the next level. He has various angles and types of finishes in his bag and gets to the free throw line often as a result of his aggression, ripping through contact. Inside the Hall has Givens finishing at 63 percent at the rim during this year’s EYBL circuit, an awesome number. With his 3-point shooting, the form is exceptional. Fundamental base, quick trigger, gets his balance really well, very repeatable motion. I’m confident in him being a shooter in the long-term.”

I really like his game for next year’s team. Even with portal additions, Givens will play a lot next season and should be able to let Stewart and Williams play off the ball which is best for them.

McMahon has shown a propensity to prefer more experienced players. Last season he started Reed because of his unique size/(potential) skill mix (6'10" that can put it on the floor from the wing spot are not common), but Ward and Phillips didn't get significant minutes until very late in the season...even though LSU was routinely getting blown out, which seemed like good opportunities to get them some run

This year he started Williams at the point. But that was, again, probably more out of necessity with Cook being ineligible. Once Cook became eligible Williams didn't play many minutes at PG. Chest has redshirted.

Given that, I'd be surprised if McMahon fully turns the offense over to a true freshman. Particularly in a year where he will be facing significantly higher expectations than he did in his first two seasons at LSU. I think an experienced PG (along with a "stretch 5) will be the two top priorities in the portal

Who returns to LSU next year? Who will enter the portal? How many transfers we looking at?

Baker, Dean, Wright and Hannibal are out of eligibility. Wilkinson has a covid year available, but he participated in Senior night so you have to think he may be moving on. On the other hand Fountain, also a Senior, did not participate in Senior night. So that may mean he is staying for another year. Cook seem unlikely to return.

Deductive reasoning suggests LSU will likely have at least 6 spots available. They currently have two HS players signed. So you are probably looking at, at least, 4 transfers…if no one else decides to leave

I don’t expect McMahon to hand over the keys to the offense or anything, but I do think Givens will play quite a bit based off his profile. Brune’s write up on him aside, most notes on Givens’ game suggest he’s a more mature player than other high school seniors at the moment. With this team’s current lack of ball handlers next season, it seems like there’s a good opportunity for him, especially since McMahon hasn’t had a freshman like him during his tenure here.

I think you’re dead on about adding an experienced point guard and post players via the portal. Another need to address is shooting. This team will lose a lot of 3-point shooting after this season.

Just from what I’ve seen, I don’t see him being a perimeter stopper on d. However he should be able to setup any offense and get other players involved first. Also he can shoot and I expect his offensive numbers to be very efficient. Ward Reed should benefit from this pickup.
