Bummed about Larson in the portal. I know he didn't play much this year but he's got talent for sure. I guess he didn't see himself as a full time starter on next year's team. Perhaps I'm being blindly optimistic, but maybe he put himself in before the deadline, will wait out the draft and see what happens and decide from there on whether to stay or go. That's probably a foolish hope, but still.
It’s possible, but doubtful. I think what a lot of fans miss sometimes is that baseball players like to….actually…play baseball. And it might not always be a decision based solely on their professional career. Sometimes guys just want to play, and there aren’t that many years left in their bodies to do so. And it’s easier to leave right after winning the CWS if they don’t see a clear path to…playing baseball. Not everybody is cool with being a glorified cheerleader for 2-3 years. And that’s ok. Some are. And that’s ok, too.
I think Larson wants to actually play baseball AND still has hopes for a professional career. He’s got a nice frame, and there’s some hidden pop in his bat. His swing may need to be retooled to find it, though. That’d be something for a professional team to work with him on.
But he needs every day college ABs to show them he’s worth the effort. Probably too big of a gamble for him to take on that being at LSU. But I’d certainly welcome him back.

it is a good take, but I do not see Jay Johnson being a "I will hold a spot until we see what happens" type of coach. It would be great if it shook out like that. We already have a JUCO OF coming in also.

Im not terribly surprised he entered the portal, it was speculated by many on here most of the season. I can absolutely understand him wanting to get to play, especially in his junior year. I kind of thought that he'd be able to do so here though. I'd imagine, or at least hope, that this was a mutual decision by him and the staff.

it wasn't mutual. jj would have loved to have him back , hell he could have started at dh over a younger guy like Pearson or he becomes a guy that can fill a position allowing other guys to dh .
I can promise you that we wanted him back. Pearson could have played first maybe and let Larson dh.
I think he left after turning down the option to be our dh next year, because he needs to start in the outfield somewhere to get drafted where he will make some money. thats not happening at dh and if Stanfield stays we will have the same outfield as this year.
pinch hitter or dh just isn't enough to get drafted unless your frey who's much more talented athleticaly

that reminds me. do yall think that if Stanfield stays healthy will stay in center or is curial ready to take over
Posted on 7/3/25 at 12:19 am to Hot Carl
yeah I agree, I think a lot of people here are just thinking about pro baseball or nil . sometimes people just want to play baseball because its fun to play baseball and its not fun to just pinch hit or even dh

I can’t see Stanfield staying. He and a couple of others will be encouraged to take their draft money and go. They are expecting Moss to make it to campus

Encouraging stanfield to leave? Find that hard to believe, unless they just promised curiel centerfield
Posted on 7/3/25 at 8:53 am to josh336
Gotta have roster spots at some point.
Posted on 7/3/25 at 8:56 am to Naptime
True, just figured they’d go lower down the rung to request those spots

quote:yeah but you’re not telling a guy who started the majority of your games in the outfield and was one of your top hitters in conference play to pack up and leave. Other players who sat the bench would probably be asked this.

He isn't necessarily telling him to leave. This happens all the time where it may not be the amount a player feels they are worth but sometimes it is best for the player and the program for him to take the 150-200K he might be offered in the draft and start his pro career.
I doubt if Stanfield ends up falling and only getting offered 50K Jay will be like "nah we don't have a spot for you here. Might as well take that 50K."

Those guys left already. Hogg, Dorsey, Ryan, etc
Posted on 7/3/25 at 9:34 am to BayTiger13
I think coaches everywhere have probably told some kids to sign their pro deal. However, it wouldn't be a wait and see thing. If Jay doesn't have a spot for some guys, they have already been informed.
Posted on 7/3/25 at 10:13 am to mikejsjr0912
I was referring specifically to Stanfield. I believe some situations are a wait and see thing and Stanfield probably falls into that. I'm sure in the exit interview both Stanfield and Jay put out there what their plans are and they know exactly the plan for each scenario that may happen.

I agree. There are always exceptions.

Any chance LSU makes a push at the big bat from UNO or the star from Southern who both are in the portal? Is it a roster spot issue until the draft to see if they can have room to take?
