I wonder what our roster limit is for 2027. It is set at 34 but the NCAA made an exception so that it is gradually cut down to that. Jay mentioned in one of the meetings last year he wanted 42 players, LSU told him he could have 40. When he missed on Reddemann, I think he went with 39 and eventually 38 when Shardar was released.

So I believe he had wiggle room of 8 extra last year on paper but I can't remember the rules to the exception, so it could be less this year.

Also I think they are voting on the 5 for 5 thing tomorrow, May 22nd.

We evaluated him as a high schooler

Was the portal class last year so underwhelming because Jay had to balance the recruiting while still in the postseason? Or does that matter at all

It definitely had an influence, but it's not the only reason.

1. Balancing recruiting while deep in the offseason has clearly been a struggle for not just Jay, but other contenders the same years as well.

2. We weren’t as financially competitive as we were led to believe we were for last cycle. Just had us budget shopping at nearly every position

3. Because of that, we missed on season changers like Reddeman, Volchko, Advincula, Robbins (not even sure if we were after him).

4. We probably expected a few other guys to enter the portal who were swayed to stay because schools figured out before we did the importance of allocating $$ on retention. I’m thinking Ohman, Ballinger, Bogenpohl, etc.

Portal arm to keep an eye on, one that I've mentioned in this thread before I think: Dylan Marionneaux from Northwestern State (and Zachary)

Stats

My favorite thing about him is that he eats innings. 3 nine-inning complete games and several other deep inning games.

He's getting a little bit of draft buzz, but is listed at 6'3" 165, so he could probably stand to put on some more weight and pitch another year in college.

I wonder what his pitch mix is like. He is close to averaging a K/IP and I love his BB rate. Seems like a nice high floor guy to add to the staff.

One more portal wishlist if he happens to enter:
Isaiah Magdaleno
Hawaii- Junior
95.1 IP
2.36 ERA
116 K
31 BB
.171 B/AVG

Found this in a Baseball America article.

In preparing this article each week, I stumble across a sleeper or two from a mid-major. Northwestern State junior Dylan Marionneaux showed out this week and popped onto the radar, going 8.1 innings against Stephen F. Austin and striking out eight while allowing one run on four hits and two walks. Marionneaux sits 94-95 mph with above-average ride and armside run, generating seven feet of extension on average. His slider is an upper-80s cut-slider with unusually low spin rates, but it’s highly effective, seeing more usage than any other pitch in his arsenal.

Just looked at his career stats and that’s a really impressive job in developing him by NSU. He literally got better in everything every season.

I could definitely see him getting into a SEC facility and really taking off with the resources. HOPEFULLY

As I like to mention often, every year besides '26 Jay has been able to snag 1 player from the Team USA CNT roster. Those players have ended up arguably being a Top 3 player on each roster.

'21 CNT --> '22 Season: Jacob Berry
'22 CNT --> '23 Season: Paul Skenes
'23 CNT --> '24 Season: Luke Holman
'24 CNT --> '25 Season: Anthony Eyanson
'25 CNT --> '26 Season: None (go figure)

Given Joe Doyle's tweet about the initial invite list, realistic candidates to BOTH hit the portal and be pursued by LSU include:
- Tague Davis; Need I say more.
- Aidan Flinn; 6'6" Lefty, 0.832 WHIP, '28 elg. No brainer here.
- Landon Hairston; Hairy Bonds for a reason.
- Rett Johnson ; Gotta say not a fan of the 5'9" frame, but doesn't strike out much, top 30 OBP in the country, 14 stolen bags.
- Gavin Kelly; I don't think he would portal but since Tigahs14 had him on a list I'll include him. Baseball America's new #1 prospect for the 2027 draft

Rett Johnson would be a great fit for our roster. You already have some good power on the roster (Bide, Serna, Braun will emerge into one). Having a good OBP guy that hit .390 for an ACC team would be an awesome add. Maybe the coaching change will help us.

Aidan Flinn is very intriguing but he's playing in his home state so I would think that could be a hard pull.

Off topic but Milwaukee just won its conference tournament earlier today and is headed to the regionals. Kent state lost in the semi’s of their tournament but I’m sure they’ll probably land in someone’s regional.

Northeastern won their conference tournament as well. Creighton is in the Big East final.

I’m sure this question has been asked before, but did lsu take a look at the Kansas SS from LSUE. I know obviously we had Milam but maybe we could have put him at 2B then he could take over SS the next year.

For message board sake, there is no history of Leblanc being mentioned besides once, so it doesn’t look like we were on him last cycle.
