I know I’ve said it before, but an additional benefit to hosting a regional is hosting portal guys on visits during that time
I was wondering if he was in town. Would make a lot of sense with the timing of things.

I mean, just expecting 3 errors by each infielder is a little crazy, like they did this year
But he definitely seems like a bat-first. Could see them trying him at 2B

Looking at this list of signees it brings up a question. Will any of these dudes look at Schmidt and be like “no thanks, I’m gonna take my money and run”??? I know his story at LSU isn’t over yet but I feel like no one saw this season playing out like it has. I guess if he comes out next year and crushes then it doesn’t matter.
they will all get the same advice
set your number and stick to it.
Teams will decide if they need to go to college to get that number or not.

I hope we at least drove the price up on them

I don’t see Paul succeeding in the portal. Just feel like he’ll spend lots on certain players he falls in love with and less and losing out on players that may help him (I know nothing except Paul plays favorites)

I think we need to make sure we don’t portal recruit over some of this years freshmen that didn’t get a lot of run. I don’t think there is a realistic chance of Jones or Frey coming back, but I think next years first baseman is already on the roster.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. I used to think it was a bad look to recruit over a lot of these freshman that don’t get run. I’ve kinda changed my tune a bit the last season or so.
Relying on some of those guys to take big jumps could create gaping holes where the sentiment becomes “why didn’t he go to the portal” and I wonder if that sort of pressure has Jay changing his philosophy. Then there’s the side where other teams will use that to negative recruit but really begs the question, how many of the teams we compete with can actually use that?
I haven’t looked and I might today, to see how many SEC teams actually have greater than 50% of their starters as homegrown kids.
Anyway, I word vomited there because I think it’s an incredibly interesting balance and I’m glad I’m not Jay.

I say all that but I do agree, I think Costello can be very good. I’m just wondering if current landscape allows Jay to be content with it.

Yeah it’s a delicate balance for sure. Last season you went in expecting someone like Kling to make a big jump forward. And when he didn’t you were left with people like Bingham in the lineup every day.

why does everyone hate on Mac Bingham? I thought he was solid
not great but solid

Relative to his expectations as a transfer, he was not good and borderline pretty bad.
He hit ~.340 in his sophomore and juniors years in the PAC12.
He hit .200 in the SEC with a .684 OPS and close to a 30% K rate. Those numbers are well really bad.
