That 34 is also the roster cap.

Ah. Okay. Didn't read the article.
What was it pre-covid? 30 or 35? I know (think) SEC series have a 27 man roster cap.

Good for Kale. No one can tell him he made the wrong decision.

NCAA just increased baseball scholarships to 34 starting in 2026. I don't believe this adreses/impacts roster sizes (yet) but I could be wrong.
Pretty sure the roster limit will be capped at 34 too. Not that this would affect us, but if you offer less than the max 34 scholarships you can still split them up over every player on your roster.

Dang that is a huge amount for Fountain, cannot blame him one bit.

Fountain got more than his number. Congrats to him. That was one I really wanted but after him combine performance, I felt it wasn’t going to happen

damn that’s a kick in that is nuts.
Padres had to be the last team with enough cash to sign him at that point.

I feel like with our luck in the draft for 3B types we will just continue to portal in guys each time around

Makes sense why he left now
I said he had the perfect profile to come in and work his way into a top 50 player, and he basically got pick 40-50 slot money.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the larger impact of the reduced roster sizes. I think next off season will be insane with the portal. But after that, I don't think it will be quite as bad.
I think programs will take smaller HS classes. It will take a little bit for the talent to disperse around the country, a couple recruiting cycles at least, IMO.
But I think it may actually be better for the players. We will have 10 fewer players in the program in the fall of 2025 than we did in the spring of 2024.
If you take the innings and at bats from the bottom 10 contributors on the roster (it's not a lot because I think 6 were redshirts) and spread them out to the remaining players, it's more opportunities for what now would be the lower middle portion of the roster.
The marginal guys at the bottom of the roster will now be at mid majors or JUCOs, getting on the field with an opportunity to end their careers at LSU rather than start them there.
I've got more thoughts on this, but I'm still trying to put them together.

Lower D1 teams, DII, DIII, JUCO and MiLB will be HUGE beneficiaries if we're going from 40 (soft cap) to 34 (hard cap) in 1 year, no doubt it the portal is going to be insane, and coaches telling fringe guys to sign pro contracts as well. They really should just expand the draft out to like 25-30 rounds for just next year.

Yeah it cant be with going from 40 to 34 players per team, simply going to be A LOT less players therefore more playing time to go around team to team with less guys redshirting or getting the BS appearances because you kind of need to cycle through probably 26-30 guys each year for some significant or at least notable playing time. Going to leave most of the "leftover" roster guys just guys who are hurt for the most part probably.

Looking at Shores stats a little bit. He made 3 appearances in SEC games all out of the pen. 7 IP with 7 Ks and 3 earned runs. Also didn’t give up any HRs, 2B, or 3B in SEC play. So almost half of his strikeouts came in just 7 innings of SEC play. His final outing was against Tenn where he got hurt and went 2 scoreless with 2 hits and 2 Ks. Seems like he was coming on as he got more experience which makes sense. I think the trouble putting guys away might have been earlier on in the season. No telling what the coaching staff was trying to tinker with/ work on.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they take a route similar to Gage Jump. Have in come out the pen and work himself back into form, and by the end of the season he is your Friday night guy. But from what I saw in that video of him posting, he 100% didn’t look that electric his freshman season. If that’s the Shores we get, it’s gonna be fun to watch.

Somehow A&M got Ryan Prager to return. He was a DES I believe

Rumor was they had a really good NIL package put together to try and get a draft eligible player to return. Few of us hinted that it was likely for Prager but as most would assume when he got picked in the 3rd it seemed like it wasn't enough.
I guess he is the 1 pick out of the top 10 rounds that turns the money down this year.
