San Diego State's coach is stepping down. Another late change that will open up a population of players for the portal beyond the normal deadline.

ETA: We were connected to Freshman RHP Xavier Cardenas out of high school. He's not in the portal currently, but could be a guy to keep an eye on.

We already know Cam Johnson is coming to campus, but the Cardinals just signed their 6th rounder for full slot.

I wonder if it was planned for him to step down the day the portal closes

Coaching changes give a 30 day window for the affected school. So the timing can’t hurt the athletes.

Even if he stepped down once the portal closed, they would still allow people to transfer out. Right? I think that’s the rule

I never understood taking Braswell. If Jay is worried about scaring people off because of numbers that makes taking Braswell an even bigger head scratcher

I believe SDSU had a middle infielder in the portal already.

Braswell plays multiple infield spots at a high level, has SEC experience, projects as a one year rental, and had batted ball characteristics that lead one to believe there is untapped power in there.

And he was available earlier.

If Hill was a one year rental I’d 100% take him, but the fact he’d be playing over Milam/Guidry a minimum of two years I think it’d send a bad message to recruits. I’d rather let the freshman get their toes wet early and develop.

Braswell is a high ceiling player. Ranked 63rd overall in his class and the scouting from his PG says that he has power to the gaps. Coach can tap into that potential, he’s the best hitting coach in the game.

“HIGH LEVEL TWO-WAY ABILITY; UP TO 91 MPH ON THE MOUND WITH A LIGHTNING FAST ARM; QUICK HANDS OFFENSIVELY, POWER PLAYS TO THE GAPS” -PG

He took Braswell way before the draft, as insurance if Milam signed. You get a not so scary guy like Braswell in the boat so Milam still feels wanted but also so you have a backup plan. He has both in the boat now. Whether he wants more, who knows...but I wouldn't be surprised. The picture is clearer for him to make decisions with the draft behind us.

I know a lot has been made of trying to figure out who Jay was recruiting in California this week. It could have been for future classes and not necessarily for the portal.

But also, all of the incoming freshmen playing in the Marshalls League in Utah are playing games in California this week against teams from another summer league. He could have been out there evaluating those guys and seeing how they look against better competition.

Speaking of summer league I saw Brady Neal was released from the Cape. Hopefully nothing to do with is injury. Only played in 4 games.

That totally seems like a JJ thing to do. "Lemme swing over here, watch my guys, see if anyone else flashes." Gangster.

Looking at his twitter he is saying the cards also signed their 7th round for slot value, and 9th rounder for over slot value

Codball tweeted out the transaction that he was released the other day. They don't get into reasons, they just report transactions.

In many cases it doesn't actually mean anything deeper than they just finished playing for the summer or they were a temp player and the Cape team needed a roster spot.

But with his injury, it's worth asking questions.

What project said. I forgot I saw the tweet until a while ago and just went to the cape website to verify thats what I remembered.

Just strange him going out there for 4 games. Maybe a Guidry scenario where he might have got sore again and they shut him down. Might be more beneficial to be on campus and building core strength.
