But does Edwards have an option or does he have leverage?

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

what we have here for the most part are teams saving a lot of pool money with these picks so they can offer bigger bucks for selected picks to come like the Ole Miss pick who dropped from the 2nd round

He won’t be back because of that per Johnson in the Perfect Game interview posted a few days ago. It makes sense that as the roster limits start to get back to somewhat normal we won’t be able to carry injured pitchers who you know can’t contribute, especially if they have options to move on with their pro career.

Stupid questions, but slot for every pick in rounds 11-20 is $150k, right?

Also, savings from their first 10 rounds bonus pools can be used to increase that $150k, right?

Any other way they can increase the bonuses for rounds 11-20?

I believe there is no slot after round 10. You just fill them with whatever is left basically.

$125K but yes.

No, only by dipping into their pool.

If the bonus is over the 125 mentioned by Project then the overage counts against the team’s pool. But the 125K for picks in those rounds is not counted in the pool they get to spend, just the values from the top 10 rounds.

Forgive my ignorance but what is the advantage of doing this vs getting the selected guys now? Are they intentionally trying to get the guys with less leverage out the way earlier?

Its about flexibility. Also, it could just be that your internal model doesn't show any available players worth your slot for that pick, so you shop down the list and bank money to see who falls through the cracks. It's risky, but it could bump your overall system by allowing you to add more high value guys.

I appreciate the explanation. I’m doing everything I can do educate myself on the mlb draft lol

I found a video on YouTube that breaks some of this down if anyone is interested:

Just to revisit this, the 150 was actually correct. It used to be 125 but they bumped it this year.

Could be wrong, but I recall something about a team being able to use the standard slot (last year $125K, this year $150K) for players picked in rounds 11-20, plus any available leftover monies from the team’s total pool from rounds 1-10, plus 5% of the total pool from rounds 1-10 before any significant penalty was levied against the organization such as loss of future draft picks. Is that true for this year?

That extra 5% is significant. For reference, the team with the 10th most bonus pool money (Colorado Rockies), will be able to throw $595,490 at a kid in rounds 11-20 plus the slot value max of $150,000. Will make most any kid think twice about going to college. Compare that with the team with the most bonus pool money (Pittsburgh Pirates), they can package $40K short of $1M to a kid drafted in rounds 11-20 without any realistic penalty. And all that is before bonus pool savings are realized from rounds 1-10 to throw on top.

The limitation from 40 rounds to 20 is a good thing overall for college baseball from a pure numbers perspective, but the consolidation of the selections makes bonus pool system even more of a sweat.

Can’t be counting chickens.

Edwards and Travinski not being drafted is a little bit of a surprise to this point.
