Considering he was suspended multiple times last year I’m not sure you could say it’s sad.
Exactly. And insiders are saying it was off the court decisions that were his undoing, not his play.

That's kinda sad. I'm not down on Hyatt, but I don't think he's a better player than Rachal.
This. Feels like a downgrade. Hope I’m wrong. Rachal looked to be coming on strong late last year.

They are 2 very different players. Rachal is more athletic I'd say, but Hyatt definitely has a shot by comparison which Rachal simply didn't possess. Rachal is gone though simply because he's a knucklehead and nothing more.

I just watched three of Hyatt's highlight videos. I know that's a small sample size and only shows good plays, but in those, he hit a ton of spot-up threes off the pass, had a few breakaway dunks, hit a mid-range turnaround jumper off the dribble and drove and scored a couple of times.
To the extent those videos reflect his true game, he is a big-time three-point shooter with better than average athleticism but not sure about his ability to handle the ball in the open floor or create his own shot with consistency. He might be fine in those areas; it's just hard to tell from three short videos. He certainly appears to have a better offensive game than Rachal, but I'm not sure about his defense.

That’s what I like about him. He can shoot really well for a guy his size, with an athletic build. You would think with that size he has the potential to rebound, defend and get baskets in the paint. He at least looked coordinated when driving to the basket, which doesn’t say a lot but at least he doesn’t look like he is lost when dribbling

None of those videos show any defense except shot blocking in general. I think he'll be a great pick up with a big upside in development, and he will develop under this staff.

What is the latest on Hyatt? Is he still announcing next week?

No changes that I've seen. He visits LSU this weekend and then announces next week.
The curious thing is I wonder what's the significance of the announcement date? I mean, if it is as much of a lock as people have said for him to sign with LSU, I wonder why he would take a few days between his visit and announcement as opposed to announcing and signing while at LSU on the visit or as soon as he returned home.

He may wind up announcing on his visit, but I see it as a kid being smart. Let the visit high wear down, get home and have one last talk with his parents to be 100% sure

Looks like LSU has reached out to 5* SF DJ Jeffries after he decommitted from UK. UK is out of it now, but Memphis is the real player in his recruitment. From Olive Branch, MS and played on Penny Hardaway's AAU team.
It's nice to be optimistic, but you don't walk away from Kentucky just to "re-open" your recruitment. Kentucky is in the position where they can turn really good players away.
Hardaway, a guy who had ZERO experience as a college coach, was hired for one big reason...lock up the Memphis area AAU scene. It never hurts to ask and make an effort if you're LSU, but this kid is going to Memphis

The only hope we have with him is if he waits until the spring to sign and he can see that Hardaway is just a good recruiter and not a good coach

We should all hope for this. Memphis is geographically positioned well to recruit from a lot of areas outside of just its own back yard. He could be a bit of a thorn in the side of Wade and LSU and make it tough in future recruiting battles. Not saying Wade isn't up to the task, but you always hate when there is another challenger in the ring to fight.

If we're gonna keep recruiting the Reids, Emmitts and Smarts of the nation, we already have enough on our hands with the bluebloods. Throw in Memphis, which could cause damage in Alabama and Mississippi as well, and it just gets that much tougher for a team trying to continue their rise

What is Hardaway's record as HC? Isn't this his first gig?
He will probably be gone in a few years.

Agreed. He will also be able to have an impact on top LA recruits as well, especially with NOLA/BR only being about a 4-5 hr drive away.
But it is another thing that makes this year pretty crucial for Wade; as funny as that is to say. I mean, who would have thought when he took this job, considering the state of the program, that he would be under big expectations this quickly. But with success, brings expectations. And having the type of talent he has this year, he needs to be able to show what he can do with that type of talent in order to continue making his case to future elite players that they should feel comfortable putting their careers in his hands. I for one believe he is up to the task.

It is his first real HC job. He was just doing AAU and middle or high school before this, I believe.
There is certainly a good chance that he could be a flop as far as an actual program manager and coach goes. But Memphis may get lucky and catch lightning in a bottle with Penny being a great coach too. He's just unproven at this point. In a way (and dear God I'm not trying to derail this convo as I don't believe it is a complete apples to apples comparison) I think Memphis is kind of looking at this similar to a LSU football model when O was hired. Get the guy you think can instantly recruit (in Penny's case based on his name and AAU connections) and let him hire a staff that can maybe bring more of an established reputation for development and schematics to the table. But as we have seen at LSU in the past, talent alone doesn't get you very far in basketball. You better have the coaching "chops" to back up that talent.

LSU is currently recruiting for 2019 6'5 top JUCO guard Charles Manning Jr. from Southwestern JC in FT Myers. Manning, is a Riverhead, N.Y. native.
