It's probably hard to see a future all american linebacker from a high school QB.

I don't find it to be that crazy. If you really think about it most duel threat QBs were the most athletically gifted players on the team. Plenty of those kids should have never thrown a football in there life. Alot of those guys would have been better as a LB, WR, TE, DE, etc. So it doesn't surprise me too much. Either way, he has come a helluva long way to get where he is, and for that congrats Jabril!

You say this, but its actually something that the 247 guys have been trying to take more seriously of late. Zach Baun was one of the all time GOAT Wisconsin HS QBs but wasn't really much of a national recruit...then he got to Wisconsin and turned into a freak of an edge rusher. Barton Simmons has talked a lot about trying to get out in front of those type of versatile athletes in the future, and you can see a lot of it in their rankings, where kids that play both ways or play multiple sports or just show multi-faceted athleticism are starting to get bumped further up lists than they would have in the past.

Will drop a little plug for both the Barton and Bud show and Cover 3 podcast. Lots of interesting recruiting/scouting tidbits in the former, and great general CFB analysis in the latter. For anyone who thinks that 247 has some type of vendetta against lsu or any other team, I'd highly recommend listening, because Barton is fricking awesome

IIRC Kendell Beckwith was a high school QB. Played DE as well. It's the best athlete on the team theory. Imagine being a 2A CB and Beckwith running right at you.

Spencer Ware is another example of a great dual threat quarterback who turned into more than that.

I think it’s a matter of a lot of these high schools putting their best athletes on the team at quarterback and these kids at 17 haven’t fully grown into their bodies yet. When they get into a college football program and add 20 or 30 pounds of muscle, keep their speed, & are 2 to 3 years older, something magical happens.

Yep, this is a huge deal--and oftentimes those "late bloomers" are the most successful players in the long term, because they had the natural chops to get by before they were fully grown. I saw an article on 247 at some point detailing how kids who break out later in HS fare better on average than the kids who are on the national radar from day one. This is a large part of why Texas ultimately went downhill under Mack Brown: They basically got their pick of all Texas players, so Mack would essentially finish off his class a year in advance. As a result, he constantly wound up with kids who had already hit their ceilings, and missed out on the late risers who were just scratching the surface of their potential.

It's an interesting dynamic when it comes to the major power players in recruiting: To what extent do you "wait and see" and leave space in your class for kids who have a big breakout their senior year? LSU has basically shot the moon in this regard of late--see Shea's article about the "mr. irrelevant" in each LSU class ultimately going on to get drafted for however many straight years.

That type of scouting edge is going to be amplified this year, since a lot of these kids aren't gonna get to camps their senior year or might not have a senior season at all.

Tre White was at QB too. Technically Kyle Williams was the kicker.

I'm as excited as anybody but we havn't even seen him in a game yet. I remember Giles was talked up like crazy and was even given the number 7 jersey because of his practice prowess but after just one game it was obvious he didnt belong out there. So I say lets cool the jets on crowning Cox as MVP until we actually see him against SEC competition.

You are correct but he didn't play QB because he wanted to. He played at a small rural program and they needed him to play offense and specifically QB. Heck IIRC he threw for 400+ on ZHS but we still managed to beat them.

Barton is a good guy and hes very intelligent. Anyone that knows his history with LSU knows he doesn't have a vendetta against LSU. He used to cover our elite camp in the summer every year and raved about it.
As for the rankings process they use it's not necessarily a bad thing and I give him credit with having the vision of trying to get ahead of the trends. However, he and his team also try too hard at it sometimes and relish going against the norm. They also lack consistency in their reasoning when pressed about why certain kids are ranked differently(all of the sites do) Still though they are the best in the business and maybe they are ahead of the game as they wish to be. We shall see.
The perceived vendetta against LSU is rooted in, our fanbases obsession with all things Alabama and the Bama bump, and 2 rankings that many LSU fans didn't agree with, Trey Quinn(I was one of those) and Kardell Thomas(one of those as well) and they were correct on Quinn and seem to be on Thomas so far. I think we just have an insecure fanbase on some fronts.

I believe he was pretty highly ranked until he missed his senior season with a torn acl.

I saw him play in high school once. He scored TDs on offense, defense, and special teams. They still lost.

Kaleb Eulls was a high school qb then later went on to play DT for Mississippi state and a few nfl teams.
