I was scrolling through the Team Rankings on on3 and noticed something interesting. In the top 50, LSU ranks #2 (Maryland #1, 149 miles) at the distance of recruits to campus at 189 mi.

And it's not even close. #3 on the list is Miss. State at 214 miles. I'll list the top 10:

1. Georgia - 487mi
2. Alabama - 650mi
3. Oregon - 930mi
4. Ohio St. - 424mi
5. Miami - 558mi
6. Texas - 447mi
7. LSU - 189mi
8. Auburn - 323mi
9. Oklahoma - 914mi
10. Notre Dame - 624mi

Not that this in and of itself is a metric for success, but it does show how LSU compares to other schools in recruiting locally and within the state. Here is the link if you want to take a gander. Stanford at 1970 miles

I was told Kelly was a lazy recruiter. Hopefully him traveling a quarter of the distance helps

Does Maryland not get the DMV blue chips? Seems bizarre they don’t have more success given the talent in that area

They got #7 from DC and #9 from VA. There are a lot of big schools hitting that area

Agreed. Lots of kids regret going away and making it hard for parents to travel to see them play

Guy had like 18 commits within a charge of his Tesla. That’s an advantage.

That's pretty close to the averages during the Les Miles era. I remember looking at this when Miles was here. We averaged like 70% LA, 20% TX MS GA FL, and 10% random places out of that footprint.

It makes sense for a bunch of reasons. The talent is here. Louisiana talent is often underrated compared to more populated states. Depending on the season, Louisiana always ranks high in NFL players per capita.

quote:

2. Louisiana
Population: 4,657,757

NFL Players: 65

1 NFL player per 71,658 people

In the not so distant past, you could draw a 150-200 mile radius with the football stadium being the epicenter and capture the hometowns of the majority of players for for any program not named Notre Dame.

So much talent in state. That’s why LSU was always a sleeping giant before the 2000s. If we could just keep those studs home we have all the talent we need to win championships right here.

I agree that Louisiana has a lot of talent, and I'm glad Brian Kelly wants to make Louisiana the number one priority in recruiting.

But there are too many years when the state doesn't produce quality quarterbacks, offensive linemen and defensive linemen to put together a team that can win championships.

Texas and Georgia are loaded with great players, and Mississippi has some really good players, though fewer and more difficult to pull from their state.

Lock down Louisiana, but it will always be necessary to recruit well in places like Texas and Georgia.

And just for a reference.. U of Maryland captures 6 states and D.C. in their radius. I was a military officer for 12 years, and there is a large population of people and soldiers in that radius.
