I think LSU need 2 S, a legit starting OT, and a good DT. Not sure why DT is being overlooked. Must be happy with the young guys.

I still think my first point about having to be at 85 by camp (doesn’t matter in the spring) is true.

It’s more complicated than that.

You can’t have more than 85 counters at any time. A player becomes a counter immediately when they first receive financial aid, and remains a counter for the full school year.

Spring football works because of midyear replacements. If a player transfers out, runs out of eligibility, enters the draft, or medically retires, you can use another incoming player as a “midyear replacement.” In that case, the new player basically takes the old player’s spot - and the new player doesn’t become a counter until the next academic year.

The end result is that you can have up to 85 scholarship players at any given time (but no more than 85) - whether that’s spring camp, summer workouts, or fall camp - assuming all of your departures qualify for midyear replacement.

The problem is that most of your HS signees don’t enroll until summer. If you have 80 scholarship players in spring camp and another 15 signees enrolling over the summer, you better have a plan to process 10 players before the summer guys come in. Teams can over sign to an extent by playing this game (basically assuming they can convince guys to hit the portal after spring camp) but it’s risky.

They already signed the giant DT from UT(who has tons of untapped potential). Otherwise I think they’re really happy with the young guys on the roster.

I’m not saying either of them did. I was throwing a fact out there so people would stop being confused. I also posted a link where someone reported his brother Trey committed. I was originally asking if the Estis guy might have been confused about which one it was.

That's it. That's what I had read before. I knew there was some way to do it. I would say it's risky in the since that you could possibly make the rest of you team think you are just leading guys on and then processing them, but the benefit of it is that you can literally hold tryouts over the spring window

with Bordelon .., in the game, it's almost a dead giveaway that we are running

Hey! I’ve got an idea! Couldn’t we play-action, fake the toss or handoff, hit a slant across the middle, behind the LBs who bit on the fake?

Somebody email the OC! You don’t have to be predictable!!

Out of all the coaches on this staff, Bo Davis is the one I trust the most on knowing what he has and what he will get from them. We haven’t been bringing in DTs for visits like we were with OL, TEs, DEs, and CBs. That should tell us what he thinks about whet he has.

The man built a hell of a DL at UT, which was a weak spot when he got there, and has put some 3 and low 4 star recruits in the NFL as solid draft picks. He knows what he’s doing.

That’s not the only risk. It’s not as easy to process players as it was in the past. You can’t force a player to hit the portal and (contrary to popular belief) you can’t just pull scholarships at will. Scholarship renewal is guaranteed in power conferences unless a player departs for non-athletic reasons (e.g. gets kicked off the team for off-the-field issues or withdraws from the university). There’s a bit more to it than that, but that’s the gist of it.

Most players will transfer willingly because they want to play. I’m not aware of a scenario where a player simply said “no” when a coach tried to process him - not that it would become public anyway. But I still don’t think you want to treat it like open “tryouts” where the losers are basically guaranteed to be guys who were already on the team in 2024.

They do have a little bit of flexibility in the fact that the renewal rules don’t apply to walk ons who were awarded scholarships.

In any case, I don’t expect that we will see a situation where we have like 85 scholarship players for spring camp, then process 15+ to make room for summer enrollees.

Or we could get out of the archaic offense were we need 2 TE’s on the field 90% of the time. Theres always plenty of extra OL that can be inserted for short yardage blocking
