re: I do like the possibility of great TEs on the field, but do we sacrifice our WR strength?

Kelly wants formations featuring 2-3 tight ends and wants versatile tight ends who can exploit differences in different ways. But it doesn't mean it will be our base scheme or that most plays will feature multiple tight ends.

Offenses under Kelly have typically featured a wide variety of formations to challenge defenses in different ways, based on down and distance situation, plus what available talent can do best. There will still be multiple WR sets and the need to recruit receivers in healthy numbers.

So you’re repeating the same thing you made fun of me for saying the other day? I guess in your opinion it’s only cool and smart when you say it.

Tell us that you’re single without saying that you’re single.

I just hope we are creative on 3rd downs, at key moments in a game and in the RZ. You don’t have to be super creative the entire game. Only the key moments in the game is where you should whip out the back pages. It’s really the same with the defense.

You just can’t be too obvious on either side or do the same things at the same times. That’s when you get in trouble. It’s very easy to get comfortable calling plays. You have to always stay on your toes. Always have a back up plan. I think we have the right guys to call plays now. Younger guys who know you have to be creative at key moments these days and know how to get that done. I can’t wait to see us play this year. I think it’s possible to beat USC by ten plus.

That’s a really talented team as well. I don’t think their OL is great though. Their DL is actually really good if you look at the film early in the year, they just wore down late in the year. I don’t think they will commit to the run enough. I don’t think they have the TEs to be as versatile as us. I think they have a really good QB, elite WRs and a very good RB but may not use him once we stuff a few plays. I think we will continue to score with long drives, keep the D fresh, create TOs and start with the better field position most of the game. Then they wear out and we finish. There’s a reason they lost to all the tougher competition. UCLA busted them in mouth and they threw in the towel. I think it will be like 42-20. At least 31-21 or 38-24. They will score because they are extremely talented but so are we and from listening to their guys out their, they believe we will lose some at WR, they not aware of our TEs and believe we are weak at RB. They also hoping for the same defense. They will be surprised if this is their expectation. Their fans will be for sure, I think their coaches are a little smarter than that.

Most OC script their first 20 or so plays, a mixture of formations. The formations gives them a look at how the defense lines up. One of my good friends who's an OC, has a 2 minute card, if it's late in the half, or the end of the game, he'll use that set of plays.

A friend that was a DC in the SEC for years, worked on the top 15-20 pass plays and run plays. An OC when the clocks ticking down, he will throw out one of those 15-20 every time.

As for Kelly, every place he's been, the TE has been a major part of his offense. His time at ND he sent more TE into the NFL draft, you'd have to go back into the 80's, to now present day, to match with the LSU TE's.

Down and distance with make usage of the TE position. Last season we used as many as 4 TE's. This season, the max could be 3-4, if they use the WalkOn, or use a OL to fill the position.
If a three TE set is working, you continue till they stop you.

Speaking of TE's at one time, Rice University had 4 TE's in NFL camps at the start of the NFL season.

We could run 2 TE sets with Taylor and Pimpton/Green and it would let guys like Lacy/Thomas/Hilton EAT.

Louisiana will always have top WR talent. Having a TD Green is like having a Bowers. You just enjoy it while it's happening. Having two competent TE's is a staple of how Kelly likes to play the game. It should give our elite WR's more favorable match ups.

Pimpton & Green are WR’s, basically.
Green is an GD ALIEN & IMO will end up being a 1st round NFL talent if he wants it bad enough. His size, speed & freakish athleticism for a guy thats 6’7” is special.

It doesn't matter if WR talent sits on the bench, although that is unlikely to happen very much.
The question on every play is what personnel creates the best mismatches, given the objectives of the next offensive play. Those objectives will be dictated by score, down, distance and time left in the game.
If 3 TE's give you the best match ups on the next play, based on that criteria, that's who should be in sent in for the play. You play to win, not to create an equitable or customary number of plays for WRs. .
