Jim,

I wasn't aware that the Everly Brothers sang those lyrics, but I know that the Statler Brothers did.

I just looked it up and I was mistaken. It was Ricky Nelson

That's understandable since her fame was established a year before you were born approximately.

Her fame went WELL past the Olympics. Her face and name were on everything and it was a story line that lasted for years and years.

No shite, but the dude was literally a newborn. Let's say he was 6 or 8 you think he would remember her? Doubtful.

I'm 30 and I remember seeing her plastered everywhere and people talking about one of the biggest Olympic moments in US history long after the fact...since I was born pretty much when it happened.

Yes. You should if you know anything about gymnastics.

Well im 32 and the name vaguely sounds familiar. I am not a gymnastics buff but I enjoy the Olympics and anything LSU related. So, this sounds like a great deal for us.

it's the equivalent of not knowing who Carl Lewis is.

No, Mary Lou Retton was bigger than Lewis. She was the story of the 1984 Olympics.

It wasn't just that she won, becoming the first American to win gold. It was her smile and her joy. It was that her coach, Bela Karolyi, was the former coach of the girl that Retton beat.

It was also about American victory over Communism. Karolyi had defected in 1981, and Retton's victory was a statement about American democracy and freedom.

She lives in Houston and knows DD, so this makes sense. Will be pretty cool to have her around the LSU gym team. Should do great for recruiting for DD also.
