A lot of people think defensive back positions are interchangeable. I see all the time comments about, “if he can’t play safety move em to corner” or vice versa. Safety is its own position. From highlights and the little game footage I’ve watched on Haulcy, the kid seems to be a natural for the position.

He takes good angles, he is very instinctive and will bait throws. His change of directions with playing the ball is fluid. If he grasps the playbook quickly, I expect he’ll be a starter. Having him allows us to really be creative in third down packages. He can play deep safety or near the line of scrimmage. Great get for us.

A lot of DB's cannot play either position but we regularly have guys that can. Tyrann Mathieu is an extreme example, All-American Heisman finalist at CB, first team All-Pro as a safety. TM7 was a generational talent but regularly we have a guy that could be contributing more by changing positions.

And you gotta think with spears, Cooley, a healthy Gilbert, toviano or cooley - we have enough here at this spot to be competitive.
The D on paper looks so much deeper and stronger than going into last camp

What moron is saying this? Those are two totally different positions.

Safeties are unlikely to have the quickness, smooth hips and change of direction needed to make a switch to corner.

*Sometimes* a corner who’s not quite quick, athletic, or smooth enough can transition to safety since safety doesn’t require as much of those things, but it doesn’t work the other way around.

Also, the move from corner to safety only works IF the corner is physical and willing to hit people.

Check this out. When's the last time LSU had a safety that was hard hitting and a ballhawk??

And these highlights are from 2023. He had an even better year in 2024. I'm not sure if people realize how good a player we are getting.

in 2024..

Fundamentally sound football player. Keeps his head up on tackles , including big hits. Secures tackles first, goes after ball second. On outside runs, plays the ball carrier outside in to force back into the defense. Solid football player.

They look better on paper than they have since Kelly came here.

That’s great to hear he is fundamental sound in tackling, wrapping up first. Usually 99% of these kids now want to try to strip the ball first give up an extra 2-4yds before they try to tackle. They go for the play that happens 1 out of a 100 times versus doing the fundamentals and getting the guy to the ground to prevent extra yards etc.

Even Mathieu was never a true CB. His accolades had very little to do with his ability to cover. His nickel role was more of a freelancing S than cover CB. Kevin Norwood ate his lunch in the title game. Norwood wasn't even good.
Not LSU but Rod Woodson will forever be the ultimate DB. HOF caliber as a CB or S. Champ Bailey another. As they aged and slowed their instincts never did. Made them excellent S.

I might be in the minority here, but with any of these transfers I have a "prove it" mentality. We've had plenty of contributing transfers, but not a lot of studs.

Haulcy looks like a SS replacement for Burns. He also looks like a Houston player to me athletically at least on that short highlight film. So we shall see how his skills translate to the SEC. Obviously hope the dude balls out.

We have by far the most talented roster top to bottom of Kelly's run. Hopefully we can stay healthy and make something happen.

I’d think most fans have this mindset for all players.

Unless you’re in that odd camp who thought Trey Quinn was good.

I just watched some highlights of him for the first time. He has great instincts and reaction time. I was thinking he was just a great run stoppers because of all the tackles he has but the kid can cover. Really excited about this guy.
