Going to ask a single, difficult question

Once we started processing the handful or more of players, did we ever actually pick up any big names to replace them other than McGlothern (who I think is going to be a super star)? Dumervil and Webb were secret commits before all this went down (or at least the thought was LSU was in a strong position to land).
I'm not a fan of processing as many players as we did, with many of them Louisiana players that are now at SEC schools. And it looks like we may struggle to sign a full class.
I think this is a fair topic to discuss without it being about bashing O or denigrating this class. But, do you think O got a little ahead of himself?

Maybe we got players that were more important to this class and ranked higher according to the coaches internal rankings

Asking a player to wait until February to sign is not considered processing in my book. It is being precaustionary and doing what is best for the program. If they had waited there may be a spot for them.

We could sign a full class if we wanted to. We’re playing the home run card for Burch and Jackson, if not, we will either get JUCO guys, transfers, or hold the spots for later.

Lets save all the class discussions until after signing day. We only have 24 more hours

Adams was picked up after Jarrett and Burton decomitted.
Bradford was picked up as a replacement for Evans.
McGlothern was maybe the guy the staff wanted to play a more versatile secondary role than Burns.
The idea that we had a full class and 5 more players begging to be a part of this class is surely hyperbole.
I’m sure with the benefit of hindsight some more players would have been a part of this class.

The reality is, in order to pull off what Bama does (and a few others sometimes) - in attaining the best case scenario after missing on a higher priority recruit, you have to be willing to really hurt some kids ON signing day.
You have to keep those on-the-bubble kids happy, committed, and thinking they’ll be signing on signing day... till you get that higher priority recruit earlier that day.
And that’s when you have to tell the lesser recruit “sorry, we don’t have a spot for you”.

Agree. I wish we could actually discuss this on this board without having everyone come in screaming about how it's negative and how people are bashing the coaches.
Here's a fact: I fully trust O and the staff.
Here's another fact: This recruiting class is absolutely excellent.
Here's a third fact: It could've been better.
All three of these things can be true at once, and I don't understand why discussing the third thing is off limits.

Meanwhile in a parallel universe, CRA-CRA posts the following on the TIGERSHITTINGS recruiting board:
quote:
Once we signed the handful of marginal LA recruits to complete our early signing class, did we lose on any big name like McGlothern (who I think is going to be a super star)? Burch didn't sign and neither did Van Pran who lost his position coach. We should have been in a strong position to land these guys.
I'm not a fan of jumping the gun to fill the class with lesser prospects when we have a chance at filling up with better prospects. It looks like the full class is limiting us.
I think this is a fair topic to discuss without it being about bashing O or denigrating this class. But, do you think O got a little ahead of himself?

Agreed. Not sure how anyone with half a brain ever believed that narrative, but after the Bama game the excitement was at an all-time high so I guess it was understandable wishful thinking.

I hope that next year we have extra spots open and can fill the whole class up with studs and so many of you will eat your words

Yep. You can't process a player that wasn't already on the roster.

I’d argue that it appears that O’s strategy is similar to Clemson’s strategy prior to this year. Get the most high quality recruits you can but don’t settle on players just fill the class.
Basically if there is a bigger fish we think we have a shot at, go after the bigger fish and if we miss then we will figure it out. But don’t limit yourself by signing lower quality players just for numbers sake.
Obviously this plan is dependent on needs as well. For example we needed QBs in this class so we signed 2 guys with tons of potential even though they aren’t can’t miss type guys.
On the flip side, we signed 3 DTs so we didn’t need to keep Jordan Berry or Jalen Lee in the class just to sign guys. We’d add a 4th DT if it was a better prospect like Jackson but it really wasn’t a need.
Let me add that I have zero inside knowledge, this is just my attempt at connecting the dots of the decisions that were made.

I agree that it’s a quality post that shows that hindsight is 20/20.

Major Burns, Alec Bryant, and Jalen Lee were told to wait until signing day. They all chose to guarantee spots elsewhere and signed in December.
I don’t know how one can say they weren’t processed. They knew that as of mid December, their spots weren’t guaranteed. Not having a guaranteed spot is a risk that I know I wouldn’t want to have if I was a top 200 national recruit, and I certainly understand their decision.
I think Jordan Berry and Demon Clowney were more straightforward in terms of getting their offers cut, and Berry had quite a bit of time to look around, starting in mid October.
