quote:

“I think you have to be very careful because chemistry is still the one thing that can really upset a locker room. Finding the right guys and making sure they’re good teammates,” Kelly said. “Just because they’re talented doesn’t make them good teammates and you still have to have 11 guys that trust each other and are accountable to each other.

quote:

“The base has to be through player development and development through freshmen, developing your program, getting the right standards set,” Kelly said. “Then you can bring in guys because they are going to assimilate to the culture that’s been built. You don’t want the transfer portal and a number of those guys to set the culture because they don’t know what it is and it takes too long. I think the transfer portal is great but it’s great if you top the tank off with it and fill in some needed positions but have the base of your program built through freshman recruiting.”

You have to balance the ability of the transfer, and the need for that ability, with the risk that his addition to the team could cause resentment and discontent. For instance, it's clear Kelly felt bringing in Daniels at QB, despite having a 6th year senior and highly recruited 2nd year QB (who considered leaving...which is why he skipped the bowl game) was worth the risk of those guys leaving the program.

If a potential transfer EXPECTS to be a day 1 starter, but is not head and shoulders better than what you already have, it may not be worth the risk. But, for example, a premiere edge rusher wants to transfer into LSU this offseason, it is probably worth taking him even though it might piss off some of the guys already on the team who are thinking next season is their time to shine.

Seems like his first portal was mostly guys with Louisiana roots too. Wanting to get back to a culture they grew up in.

I don't think kelly was ever going to take denver harris out the portal.

Jacoby mathews is a different story.

not saying that LSU needs Harris, but look at the history of the NE Patriots. They have brought in guys that had gotten into trouble in the past, and that seemingly stopped when they got to NE. Maybe Harris reacts positively to true leadership? Or maybe not.

we all agree that culture is #1, talent is #2.....and in Kelly we trust.

THIS! Gotta love his approach to building and maintaining our LSU program & standards.
Set the pace coach!

Loving what I am hearing from BK. Bring in the freshmen, teach them discipline/culture and development them on/off the field. Be selective in the portal to bring in plug and play type guys who fit your locker room. It is nice having an adult in charge!!
