LSU quarterbacks coach Joe Sloan and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock are in Jacksonville, Fla. to check in on 2024 quarterback commit Colin Hurley on Thursday.

The Tigers reeled in the four-star prospect this fall as he reclassified from 2025 to 2024. He’s been a key recruiter for the 2024 class since announcing his intentions to head to Baton Rouge.

Hurley is the No. 252 overall prospect in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 14 quarterback and the No. 38 junior recruit in state of Florida.

This month, he earned an invitation to the Elite 11 Finals after competing in Oxford (Miss.) at the regional stop for the prestigious fraternity.

quote:

Hurley is 7-on-7 teammates with Phenix City (Ala.) Central five-star wideout Cam Coleman, who is set to officially visit LSU in June. It’s been no secret that he wants the No. 1 prospect in Alabama to leave the state and play for the Tigers.

I just don't get his rating. He was a 5 star in the 2025 class now he's barely a 4 star after reclassification. Lol, sure.

They'd create a new 6 star rating for him if his last name was Manning.

53% completion percentage, a year behind developmentally(theoretically), size(though no clue why height is important anymore), recruiting sites hate LSU(according to conspiracy).

That number is bothersome.

I mean, depending on what type of offense they run and what they have at receiver, that can affect the completion percentage a ton in high school.

I think it would be more important to see how he does in the elite 11 with accuracy

In the paraphrased words of the great Mike Leach - “You can’t teach an inaccurate QB to be an accurate QB”.

So hopefully it’s his offense and receivers.

He has at least one 3 star RB/WR and another WR with a half a dozen D1 offers. That's pretty good for a high school offense.

To me it's the biggest concern. He throws hard but he's wild. I saw it in 7v7 this spring.

He is also short (which I agree is BS - see also Bryce Young) and not particularly fast. Basically, he is a shorter Ryan Mallett/Josh Freeman

I hate judging QBs on 7 v 7, but you better at least be accurate. I think kids create too many bad habits with 7v7. Hurley specifically gets lazy with his feet, and I know it affects his accuracy. It’s just a poor representation of real football.

So he's a project, basically.

The kid basically just finished his sophomore year of HS football. What percentage are you expecting? He will have 2 seasons to develop behind Nuss.

And he's not going to play a 4th year.

A little better than 1 out of 2 passes hitting grass, ideally.

No guarantee Nuss is here in 2025.

When you play at the best team in your conference and you are the starting QB, you should be hitting north of 60% and really north of 65%.

We cannot use his youth as a reason to justify substandard performance and then get mad when he's not rated a 5 star.

Raiola - 64%
Jaydn Davis -72%
Elijah Brown - 68%
Julian Sayin - 66.5%
CJ Carr - 64.2%
DJ Lagway - 67%
Air Noland - 64.2%

I don't think he was ever a 5*. I don't think any sites had even ranked 5* in the class of 2025 at the time he reclassified.

I'm really not trying to dog him, but completing passes isn't something that's going to magically get easier. If he has great athletic ability but his footwork is trash and he muscles the ball it's probably going to take years, not months, to retrain him.

Totally agree. I hope he turns out to be a stud. But I get why he's not rated up there with the Sayins and Raiolas and Lagways.

I do think we should take a second QB as a hedge - and one with a proven track record of accuracy (even if he's not as highly rated).

I'm okay if we just go transfer portal.

Let's just say that the chance of Nuss starting for LSU in 2024 is 99.5 percent. If he's as good as we all think he is, no guarantee he's here in 2025. We good with Collins and 18 year old redshirt freshman Hurley?
