Don't be surprised if sponsorship coordinator is the next big thing in college football

As next year's batch of elite athletes get ready to sign in less than a year, don't be surprised if the elite programs create sponsorship coordinator positions on their staff. In the "old" days, the elite athletes wanted to go to the program that could get them to the NFL, but now parents/players want to go to a program that can make them money now and also get them to the league. I wouldn't be surprised if these sponsorship coordinators join coaches on the recruiting trail to make presentations for the parents/players. This new NIL legislation has become larger than anyone ever imagined and I think sponsorship coordinators are going to become a necessity to compete in the wild world of recruiting!

A hired position on staff at LSU is what I imagined when he was talking about this.

This what I have been saying from the beginning of this shite. As hard as it is to recruit now we will have to put together packages for top athletes. I would rather pay em under the table

Good for them. Whatever helps LSU stay ahead of the game.

My guess is that they probably want to keep that with a third party company for the time being, until the rules clear up a bit. That helps unwittingly stepping in some shite. Obviously it can still happen. But these rules aren’t entirely clear yet. So, until they clear up, keep it with a 3rd party company.

Paying under the table I'm sure will continue, but I think most boosters will just align themselves with a company and funnel money to the athletes that way.

They are going to need an accounting department so these athletes do not end up in tax trouble.

I don’t know if it’s “sponsorship coordinators” persay, but I do think SIDs of each sport or sports will have completely different roles in the coming years. There will no longer be a “traditional” SID role. I think NIL will change the scope of how SIDs are utilized and who is qualified to be an SID in the future.

This is 100000000% already happening. I read an article the other day about Kentucky basketball’s NIL pitch. They have stuff down to the number. Average price per post. Average exposure and likely follower increases. Etc etc etc. Basically, this is how much you can make now at kentucky versus other schools, and this is how much coming to kentucky can increase your exposure in comparison to other schools. And not just generic platitudes—they’re talking actual real numbers.

Thought the schools can’t help out with the deals.

Can you provide a link to this article? I genuinely want to read it

The schools cannot be openly involved in the deals the players make using their NIL. Once the deal is done they can help them with content if the state’s law allows it.
It’s not larger than anyone thought. It’s going exactly how most people involved expected it to go.

That responsibility is on the players. The school can advise them on what to do but the players have to do it.
NIL is not a part of the university. It is the players being their own independent contractor outside of their responsibilities of being a student-athlete for the university.

If nothing else there has to be someone who can let players know who they CAN'T sign with due to sponsorship conflicts...

...and Sankey said in respo se to the new rules that he has no idea how the NCAA or SEC will regulate or control NIL. In other words it is going to be a free for all and everybody will do what they can get away with.

I agree. I think it's going to be the wild, wild west! Never thought I would ever see a player - possibly an incoming freshman - make more than the head coach, but it's going to happen!
