Did LSU just get played by the Underwood family?

For weeks, it was being reported that Underwood was heading to LSU and it was basically a done deal. As of Oct. 29th, Sports Illustrated reported that Underwood had returned to visit BR several times and had not taken an official visit to any other campus.

In a matter of days, however, Underwood suddenly flipped his commitment from LSU to Michigan and it's now being reported that, despite what was being reported by the media, Michigan was very much in the picture all along and the two parties had met secretly on several occasions. During this time, Underwood had also put several photos of him in an LSU uniform on social media.

So why would Underwood have no problem with the media reporting his several visits to LSU, but didn't want any word of his communication to Michigan getting out? I can only surmise that he was simply using LSU as bait to force Michigan to increase its price and it worked perfectly. The way this entire situation unfolded, it makes me wonder if Underwood ever had any intention of coming to LSU or were the Tigers just a pawn for bigger and better things.

I would like to think his commitment was sincere, but college football is the dirtiest business in the world, so nothing would surprise me!

Happens all the time. Take your spot until better offer come along. Remember what these coaches have to deal with their word means nothing.

I think he was always coming to lsu until Michigan offered crazy money and lsu started falling apart on offense.

It gave Michigan an in

Maybe he would've left even if lsu was undefeated but I truly believe he wanted to be at lsu until 10 or 12 mil became a reality.

They also signed his best friend.

Michigan kept upping their offer till it got way too much to say no to.
maybe at the end he was playing them a hit but Michigan wasn’t taking no.

if it was always about money he probably woild have been talking to more schools

You really can’t say no to that money. He could be a complete bust and just covered him and his family for life.

It’s very possible Underwood could transfer to LSU after his freshman season. Depends if he plays a lot his first year or not

If you were engaged to someone for a year and someone with ridiculous money came and she left you for them would you consider yourself played?

It doesn’t matter how long you think there’s a “committment” to something, the moment anything comes in between that, a true commitment never existed and you got played.

Underwood was interested in LSU, that’s as far as you can call it. We got played, used, trolled, whatever you want to call it. They didn’t even call our coaches to tell them. That’s played homie.

I think that both teams being bad this year had a lot to do with it. Confidence in Sloan probably waned, and Michigan needed a big morale boost no matter the cost.

Had we looked decent the last couple of weeks and Mich not offered 10 mill I think we probably sign him. It was always going to be hard to pull him from mich and then get him on the field without transferring if he wasn’t going to be a day one starter.

With how quick he started recruiting for Michigan and recruiting some lsu commits and some la kids it does look very suspicious.

Had absolutely NOTHING to do with it.

He was always going to Michigan. He just wanted Michigan to up the money.

I don’t know what we offered him but all Michigan had to do was get within the ballpark and he was going. If we had offered 10, even if they had only offered 9, he was going to Michigan. Of course he would have stayed “committed” to LSU up to the very point of signing but he ultimately would have chosen Michigan. It’s where he always wanted to be.

Why? LSU had back to back Heisman winners. He was committed to the “best school for QBs”. He had all the leverage he needed just from that. And sure, if Michigan had told him to kick rocks and not offer him anything, he probably would have just said “frick it” and gone to LSU. But he always wanted to go to Michigan. He just wanted to bleed as much out of them as he could before hand.

Either that or the kid just doesn’t want to be part of a program in decline.

Nope. “How we looked” this year had zero to do with it. You can blame it on that if it makes you feel better about it, but the kid was never actually going to sign with LSU as long as Michigan got “in the ballpark” with the money.

It’s EXACTLY what most people would have done in his shoes.

Let’s say you are the number 1 guy in your particular field. Let’s say you really want to work for company A because you’ve always liked company A’s products, it’s closer to home, etc etc. let’s say you knew company A wanted to hire you real bad but there is also company B that wants to hire you real bad too even though you are t quite as fond of company B and it’s a lot further drive to work, etc…. You telling me you wouldn’t also apply to company B and get an offer from them and see if it’s higher than what company A offered you? If you have any sense at all you would. Even if you had no intentions of taking the job, if you are smart you’d at least see what they offered so when you DID get an offer from company A you could say “man I really like what you guys do but company B is offering me more” to try and leverage more out of company A.
