He was probably looking for the best NIL deal he could get. However, he is not a proven commodity against SEC competition so either way it would have been a gamble. I trust our coaching staff to do what they need to do to make us competitive at that position

Two things can be true at once:
He is not very good. You can watch highlight after highlight of him getting washed off the line at TCU. Low motor as well. Him being on the team doesn’t make us turn into a NC roster.
We also have a desperate need to talent at DT. It’s arguably the second most important position on the field and we are going to seriously struggle next year because of where we are. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many 1-3 rd draft picks at DT in the portal right now.

So if someone like Donovan Edwards entered the portal we shouldn't go after him?
Bind trust. Nice.

I don't know what the NIL bag situation is but I would rather Kelly instruct Bayou Traditions to lean heavily on the DTs from the high school ranks. There are some really good ones in the pipeline that we lead on and if NIL resources are tight I can see placing higher priority on those recruits rather than transfers. I'm not saying to not go after potential DT transfers, because I know we need to up that position, we just can't overpay and potentially miss out on the high school DTs leaning toward LSU with much higher ceilings because we threw too big of a bag at a transfer DT.

We will see him on November 30th. Assuming he even plays.

This is a great example of how important NIL is. LSU has a huge need, almost guaranteeing a starting spot on a potential playoff team. LSU has a great DL coach with a great track record.
In the past, we pull this guy 9/10 times. However, NIL is all that matters these days.
Coaching hiring is going to start to look more like the NFL where it’s all about on-field coaching. Does it even matter if coaches can recruit any more?

Players getting paid more than coaches?

It does but the NIL bag plays a big factor.

It is not. QB is #1 obviously. WR is #2 and Left Tackle is #3 CB and DE (Pass rusher) are #4 and #5.

We technically have bodies. We need experience and skill. I think a quick look at the roster shows us with 6 DTs (with Paea) I don't think that included someone like Shand.

Great thread title. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

As opposed to whom? Jalen Lee and our third-string center? Counting on Williams to play DT at an SEC starter-quality level would've been a gamble but our other options aren't?

I mean, yes, it's true that there are six living breathing humans on our DT depth chart. But that includes:
Jalen lee (who has never played at the level of even a rotational bench player)
kimo makaneole (our 3rd string center)
shone washington (who has apparently been running behind kimo)
dom mckinley (a true freshman non-early enrolee)
Even if Guillory and Paez were legitimately great starters, that would be an abject disaster of rotational depth, because the bare minimum rotation should be 4 guys. And, the thing is, Guillory and paez *aren't* great starters - they're not even good starters. Hell, they're not even *average* starters.
Think about how horrific we were against the run last last year. Well that was with 3 DTs who were all head and shoulders better than any IDL we have on roster.
And something I hadn't really even thought about until just now: Next year, this could get even scarier.

Cap, when do we make you a mod so you can just delete this crap as it comes up?

In college you can make a very good argument that it is. Auburn almost beat the best college football team ever (2019 lsu) because of an interior lineman and a bunch of mostly no named, undrafted guys. I’d put wr right up there but an interior dl who can eat up doubles in the run game and pass rush is, at the very least, as valuable as any position outside of qb.
