Funny all the people trying to do mental gymnastics to make this kid more than he is.

Not sure if it's been posted on here, but his late grandfather (passed last month) is a UT legend, and was one of the biggest big money donors to the program for a large period of time, and was one of the guys who pushed for Mack Brown to get hired. And his brother attends Texas.
So while his dad is apparently a big LSU fan, he does have some Texas strings pulling him as well.
Texas is trying to get him in as a blue shirt where he walks on for a year and then goes on scholarship after, so that he doesn't use up a 25 man class counter; his family can definitely afford it

Blueshirt gets a scholly right away, it can just be counted against the next class if the player doesnt play all season. What you described is more grayshirt, where someone either pays their own way first semester then gets scholly, or just delays enrollment to the next semester to count towards next class.

What's the name for a kid PWO for a year, and then getting a scholarship? If a kid is on campus for a year and then gets a scholarship, it doesn't count against the 25

Maybe you should wake up when a kid gets offered by Freeze, Kiffin and Sarkisian though. I'd say they've seen some good QBs in their time and know what to do with them.
This is a weird recruitment because as a junior he started to take off then didnt get the chance to play his senior year, and with no camps last year either probably was tough to ever get noticed. It's clear he can at least play from his junior film. Not a freshman starter or anything especially missing football this past year, but a guy you can develop down the line for sure.

Gotcha. Well until/unless the rules change, I think we'll start seeing a lot more PWO's pay their way for a year before getting put on scholarship since everyone should have more room on the 85 man going forward

What he is describing is a PWO who can earn a scholarship in a year. There really is no special term for it. A grayshirt delays fulltime enrollment until after the fall and then gets a ship that would count against the following year's numbers.
FWIW, the rules really don't really support a blueshirt anymore. Yes the rule still exists for counters, but the new signing rules essentially negates it. I know it sounds stupid, but initial counters and signings are not the same thing. Every initial counter has a corresponding signing, but not every signing has to be an initial counter (e.g. an athlete who signed an LOI but failed to qualify would still count as a signing, but would never be a counter). The new signing limits say that anybody who gets a ship during the fall semester has to be counted in the current year. This contradicts and negates the blueshirt rule.

Nah creates a new melt regarding the fact we lost a QB to Texas and now we will never ever ever get another recruit in the history of LSU football.
