Can Someone Explain…Re: Herring

why Griffin would leave for a few hundred thousand dollars? If he stayed and was drafted next year in even the 2nd or 3rd round, that could be a few million dollars difference. I would think if he really believed he could improve his draft stock he would return.
That’s why I’m asking the question, because I don’t understand the MLB draft process and the ins and outs.
Certainly wanted him back. Jay said he’s a definite weekend starter, if he returned.

Doesn’t sound like he enjoyed his experience at LSU. Or possibly just the coaching staff

Some kids just want to go pro. I personally don’t think it was a great decision but I am not in his shoes. He could have gambled on himself and improved his stock but I guess we will never know now.

Age is a big factor. He is old and that 1 year makes a pretty big difference to a lot of teams. May have also heard from scouts that starting 1 year won’t boost him as much as we’re thinking. We may never know, but he is gone and I wish him the best

Why do you say that?

So you wouldn't like to play for the yankees?

Leverage is everything in the MLB draft. College seniors taken in the 1st round could get stuck with a $50k bonus or less and can’t do squat about it. Juniors and 3rd year sophomores drafted can return to college if they don’t get a good offer/fair deal.
If a good deal is made you’re better off taking it. Guys like William Schmidt who pass up $2-3M now thinking it will be there later are taking a huge risk. See: Cam Johnson

Doesn’t apply to Herring. He isn’t a junior. He is a draft eligible sophomore.

So you think the Yankee farm system is like a country club compared to the rest of the teams? No guarantee that he makes it to the bigs. But good luck to the young man.

His age is a big factor. He won’t be valued much more even if he starts and does well. I’d have to think those are the reasons. Plus we don’t know what offer he actually got. Maybe they’re offering 3rd round money.

Read naptimes posts. He’s been hinting it for months

Not sure about that. Proving yourself as a starter versus a potential bridge to a closer is a big deal

Maybe. Maybe not. Don’t know what feedback he was given is all im suggesting

Agreed, not that many hard-throwing LHPs (mid-90s or better) with nasty off speed on MLB rosters. Would be interesting to hear CJJ's take/advice, which we'll probably not get. Based on his tools & upside, I think he could have done better, but best of luck to him.

It’s better than most I believe.

I'm pretty sure you would consider it betting on yourself to go pro now. In his mind he believes he won't be in the minors long.
Not that I agree with it

"Herring never was coming back. No matter what. Only surprise about him was him not entering the portal just in case"
Player's dad over last few weeks:
5/5/24:
Herring is gone!...
6/5/24
I said this earlier in the year and was berated. He isn’t a selling point for staying. The Herring video should make sense because the pitchers don’t trust him. Some will go the draft, some will transfer but very few, if any want to work with him again....
We will lose more than we should. We were already losing a lot! Moffit is a prime example……would say Herring is almost for sure gone also. It’s not because they don’t love LSU! ...

Rumors of him not liking Yeskie was all over the board for a while now. Entirely too many people saying it to not have some substance. Him taking 6th round money just confirms it.
