You can fill your team up with 3 stars all you want. Just know your team won’t win shite without 4 and 5 star players

Certainly stars are indicative of success.
But, they aren't as important as work ethic and ability to assimilate data and react to field situations.
Burrow was what, a three star? Yet his work ethic and ability to react to field display made him the best ever.

Name me a team that was outside of the top 20 in recruiting that has won a natty since the playoffs have started. Don’t worry I’ll wait. Are there exceptions that end up outplaying their rankings? Yes there are but to act like it doesn’t matter to recruit highly rated 4 and 5 stars is insane. You aren’t going to find a class full of Hesters Whites Cushenberries all the time.

Not once did I say we shouldn't go after the best players. Nor did I say we should fill our class with under the radar guys. College coaches evaluations are right more times than the services which is why you see players constantly moving up or down in the rankings. The staff knows what they are looking for and that should override any recruiting ranking. People need to quit hanging on to how many stars a guy had in high school. Stars don't mean a damn thing once you get to campus.

Dude, he means that they have seen more then there highlight films, as in they've been to the games and seen the whole game, not just the best plays of the year, but all of there plays from a season.. He's talking bout highlights not being the best way to evaluate a player, instead, watch there bad plays and all of the above

Kid is not the pure thrower we need to keep this type offense in place. He’s a great athlete playing QB. Very average thrower that will be proven wherever he goes. Nuss is much better fit. No way you were getting both to stay 3 years. No way.

Everyone is saying that Nuss is amazing and his film is better than Williams. How come the scouts and people on the recruiting sites think there are 6 better pro style prospects than Nuss? FWIW I think Nuss is a monster and I think the recruiting sites are underrating him, why I have no clue. According to 24/7 composite he’s the 7th best pro style and the 12th overall qb.

Nuss is a little short and needs to add weight/muscle. Scouting reports question how high his ceiling is.

My thoughts from what I've seen are his highlights, stats and level of competition indicate an exceptional player. I also watched his 7v7 highlights and saw a kid that has a very good presence and rapport with the other players. I also saw his interview where he discussed his development and how he plans to improve. It was more like a college JR than a HS kid from a maturity standpoint. I also see his pedigree being a coach/player's kid. All these lead me to believe he's going to be a very successful player.

I think Williams will be a great player and would love to have him as a Tiger. If he wants to come here great. Right now it seems he's trending away and Nuss is trending LSU so my focus is on what Nuss can bring to LSU.

I hear this a lot, but there’s a key flaw in this logic. I agree that the staff’s board should override the recruiting rankings. But nobody knows what the staff’s recruiting board actually looks like. How do you know whether the 3-star guy was above the 5-star guy on their board, or if they just couldn’t get the 5-star guy?

Nuss needs to grow an inch or 2 and gain 25 pounds.

Yeah, short QBs from Texas who can throw accurately never amount to much....just ask the Saints!

Or you can ask the Cardinals, also check out what CW was wearing. Probably means nothing but you never know.

No one realistically expects LSU or any other school to sign all of the 5 star guys they are after. I do believe the coaches have certain traits they are looking for regardless of star rankings and go after a kid that fits the mold. What that looks like on their board, no one knows. Certain kids can be coached up and developed at the collegiate level and some can’t which will ultimately give these coaches tenure or have them packing their bags.

Right. So what if it’s a 3-star guy vs. a 4-star guy? The point is that whenever we get a 3-star or low 4-star guy and don’t get a top-100 or top-150 guy, there’s a segment of this board that screams “stop star gazing!”... “Justin Jefferson!”... and “trust the coaches!”

Sure, sometimes coaches have a guy higher on their board than the recruiting services and it’s intentional. But unless you have inside information, it’s silly to just assume that is the case. It’s just as likely, if not more likely, that the highly rated guy simply decided to go elsewhere. Meaning we missed on him. It’s not the end of the world, it happens all the time. But call a spade a spade.

Half of the NFL is three star and below. Georgia claims 20 or more five stars in their two deep roster. Miles in his later years had highly rated players...mostly skill positions.. and we got killed on the line of scrimmage. Brandon Harris was a highly rated four star. Malachi Dupree was a must get five star... who was the linebacker from Illinois who never played a down.

Yep a program has to be in the top 20 of recruiting probably to compete at a high level. But the recruit rankings are far from perfect

Sawyer Robertson is better than both of them, we should be trying to flip him from State.

Ok, so why do experts who get paid to watch and rate the kids think he isn’t as good as either?

Half of the NFL is three star and below.

There are roughly 350 4-star and 5-star recruits each year. That’s out of 8,000+ freshmen in FBS alone. So to put your statement another way... 5% of college football players are 4-stars and up, but they make up half of the NFL. I’d say that makes it a pretty good indicator, no?

From 2000-2014:
- 53% of 5-star recruits were drafted in the NFL
- 20% of 4-star recruits
- 6% of 3-star recruits
- 3% of 2-star recruits

In the past 4 years, 16 teams have made the CFP. Only three of those teams were outside of the top 10 in the 247 Team Talent rankings (which are based on 247 composite recruiting rankings):
- 2018 Oklahoma (#11)
- 2017 Oklahoma (#16)
- 2016 Washington (#24)

Put another way - here are your odds of making the playoffs over the last 4 years based on the 247 Team Talent Composite rankings:

Ranked #21-25: 5%
Ranked #16-20: 5%
Ranked #11-15: 5%
Ranked #6-10: 25%
Ranked #1-5: 40%

The recruiting services’ rankings may not be perfect, but they’ve been pretty damned good at projecting success for both teams and players. The fact that we squandered talent all those years doesn’t change the clear correlations that exist.
