If we had ended up with Underwood would we have been as active in the portal? Would we have had the budget to sign all the players we have from the portal? And, do you think we are better off having signed the players from the portal vs if we had signed Underwood without the ability to get these guys from the portal? Or maybe one has nothing to do with the other?

Hard to say but I do think there would be less pressure on the staff

the players may be slightly different, but they would have been just as active

Bryce Underwood May end up being very good, but there are a lot of unknowns. We are better off spreading that money around as we are doing. If Nuss puts up a great year we should be able to find a good QB in the portal. There’s also the possibility that Hurley has what it takes.

Or Van Buren. I'll be honest, LSU has never had issues finding good QB talent, but if Nuss goes out and has a good 2025, the talent will want to be in Baton Rouge.

I think something to look at that’s pretty telling is the lack of portal activity by Michigan. I think they’ve picked up 5-6 guys that are listed as 3 stars for the 31st ranked portal class.

You add that to their 9th ranked recruiting class(who knows what they’d be ranked if they didn’t get Bryce)and it’s seems like spending everything on Underwood probably hurts them overall. It’s not like he’s joining some already stacked team.

I wish LSU could’ve kept him, but if they did, they probably aren’t making as many big portal moves as they did.

Lol @ Underwood for not being patient. He's going to a program with an unproven coach & far lesser talent. As with so many of these young players, they are valuing money over fit & development. They get mesmerized by the big bag instead of focusing long term on the mega bag. Being good at their craft (football) is what opens the opportunities at the collegiate level. Continuing to grow & get better is what will allow the following opportunities at the NFL level. That's what's getting lost right now.

Hmmm. That statement might be up for debate.

It wouldn’t shock me if he lands at LSU in a couple years

Finding a QB but finding a good one or lives to the potential. I will agree with that.

You really had to of missed the Les miles era. Fan base would get excited if our quarterback threw for over 200 yards. Mettenburger was a anomaly. He needed two NFL type receivers in obj and Landry and they had to catch a lot of balls one handed.

I think you entered a win-win scenario.
Bryce stung. A lot.
But you used those funds along with some others to acquire not only a potential QB of the future AND got a lot of talent for next year's team.
Perfect way to respond after losing him.

Short term it's a positive freeing up funds for players next year. Long term.... we'll see what the QB room looks like.

That wasn't all talent. LSU pretty consistently brought in 4* QBs with the occasional 5* mixed in. Les just ruined their development, or was a bad evaluator. If you think back, there was pretty much always a QB on the roster that was supposed to end up being the guy. Les would trot him out there and he would go 6/18 for 83 and 2 INT. I always wondered if they even practiced passing routes in practice.

I wasnt too upset about Underwood because this is the era of grabbing an experienced portal qb, or at least someone that shows promise as an upperclassman. Years of practice reps. In recent memory some of our best QBs have all been transfers — Mett, Etling, Burrow, Daniels.

Overpaying for an 18 year old just doesn’t seem worth it. A lot of these great portal qbs are no name guys (as in not highly rated out of HS) as well which makes it even better.
