Ross Dellenger has written an article for SI about the coming impact of the one-time transfer rule, NIL rules, the Covid-shirt year, etc. He points out that many of the 1500 or so players currently in the portal won't find landing spots, and the abundance of players in the portal will affect all aspects of recruiting going forward. BTW, he uses Mannie Netherly as an example of what can happen to a player who enters the portal. Really interesting stuff, with huge potential impact on the sport.

The fact that coaches have to now constantly recruit their own players is absurd. And most of these kids just want instant gratification if things don't go perfectly because the grass is always greener, so it's already started to be like the NBA and NFL in that regard.

The transfer portal in combination with the CFB playoff/selection committee has already started to sour the sport immensely.

That's the point. It's obvious that many of these kids aren't mature enough (like Mannie a few years ago) to make the best decision for themselves or are getting bad advice, because they all are just hoping to get immediate playing time or to transfer to whatever school is the flavor of the month instead of sticking it out, building relationships, growing as a player and individual, and probably graduating as well.

From the article
quote:

The 25-man limit was implemented to disincentivize the trend of coaches cutting or pushing out scholarship players in an effort to oversign high school players or transfers.

Yet this is exactly what Bama has done every single year and the NCAA conveniently looks away and penalizes other schools for minor infractions like a kid getting a free pizza.
They have to find a way to enforce a strict 25-man limit or go even further and reduce the scholarships to stop the 5-6 big dogs from stockpiling all the talent if they are interested in a semblance of parity

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t he have been a senior last year. Most likely would have seen playing time and we wouldn’t have had to burn a scholly on the Nicholls corner.....

It may take a few seasons, but these players are going to start realizing that the portal isn’t the answer.

What ever changes happen, you know Bama will take advantage of them. They are doing it now.

Bama continues to follow their tradition established by The Bear, signing players just to keep other schools from having them. He did it when there were no roster limits, the Midget and his bff running the NCAA are basically doing the exact same things today

To be fair, Burrow followed the grad transfer rule meaning he stayed 3 years and obtained a degree from his previous university and Fehoko sat out a year upon transferring. These two either stuck it out to complete their college degree or received a penalty for leaving early.

IMO Justin Fields and how the NCAA handled that situation is the biggest reason the flood gates opened. He was given a no penalty transfer bc of a “hardship” that was somewhat arbitrary.

I mean at some point, he should just sign with a smaller school and be done with it

Mannie never had a solid spot on the team 1st he was a wr... Then he moved back to DB... Switched from corner to safety... Some of these kids want to play what they believe is the best position for them and if it's not with said team let them move on... It's not that serious..

Bottom line is, Ncaa needs to make them think twice before they transfer, make them sit out a year, like it used to be, its a bit hilarious these days, "oh I didn't start today, so im leaving"

I just find it hard to say that a player quit on the university that he actually received a degree from. The whole point of college is to receive a higher education degree and Burrow accomplished that. Burrow fulfilled his obligation to OSU.

I agree that you can say Fehoko quit on TT but he did pay a penalty for doing so.
