Billy and Shea had On3's director of scouting, Charles Power, on for the hour. Great insight into their ranking process and select recruits for the 23 class. Highly recommend.

Great listen good to hear the breakdown of how they rank players was interesting to hear when he said how WRs ranked 20-50 are so close you could shuffle them around. Always wondered why Kyle Parker was ranked so low with the amount of production he put up his senior year against high level competition in Texas

Billy did a good job explaining his thoughts on Parker's ranking. Basically 65-70% of those gaudy stats were in a couple of games. The others left something to be desired.

This is why it's dumb to worry about overall class rankings to the degree that some people do.

I'm not saying they don't matter at all, but it's pointless to get worked up about having the 6th or 7th ranked class vs the 4th or 5th ranked class. The team that gets the 20th ranked WR (93.87) will obviously get a bigger bump than the team that gets the 50th ranked WR (89.95). But the guy largely responsible for those numbers admits there's very little, or nothing, separating those two players and that it's basically random.

Listening as I type. Please forgive any grammatical errors.

-2023 class was headlined by Zalance Heard and DaShawn Womack both ranked as 5 *'s by On3

-Emery Jones finished higher in the rankings than Will Campell did in last years class.

-Charles says that he could see Heard coming in and starting at RT and sliding Emery Jones inside which he thinks is more natural.

-Charles saw Zalance at Under Armour and says he doesn't get enough credit for how ready he is. Probably needs to reshape his body. thinks he might be 320 right not and could trim down in the weight room

-Can't teach the mass and length that Zalance has. Great as a people mover. Compared to DJ Fluker. Will need to get up to speed at pass blocking.

-Lost his first two reps at the UA practice and then immediately took over. Has that nasty demeanor.

-DaShawn Womack and Keon Kelley are the two most ready to play at the EDGE posotion. Developent will be needed but he is already ahead of the curve.

-Womack is a solid 245. Runs in the 4.7's. Pure pass rush skills. Very technical with his hands. Outside of pure physical traits he has a natural pass rush.

-15 sacks in 10 games. St Frances plays a national schedule. He dominated the DeSoto game and DeSoto won the state title in Texas. Womack was the best player on he field in that game.

-He moved up in the final rankings due to his Senior season. If he played in an all star game he could have gone even higher. He has the potential to be the top EDGE in the class.

-Shea askes about comparisons to former LSU players. Charles said that Womack is ahead of Chaisson and Ojulari at this point. He has less questions about him than those two coming in.

-Womack comes in with an upside and a very high floor.

-Charles had Zalance as a 5* when he only had three offers. Billy giving Charles credit for making that call so early on in the season.

-The biggest questions about Zalance Heard were if he was going to play defensive line instead.

-Heard is a very nasty guy. No finesse to his game at all.

-Heard was almost like Charles Cross who was Charles Power's first guy he looked at when he was at 247.

-Kyle Parker out of TX. 4* comes in with Jalen Brown & Shelton Sampson Jr.

-Kyle Parker not in the top 300. He is super polished. Works hard at route running and works with trainers.

-Kyle Parker is the most advanced and polished. High volume, possession WR. Really great YAC. Won't blow you away physically. Highly skilled.

-The WR group as a whole has a variety of skills. Jalen Brown is like a Z, field stretcher and can move the safety.

-Questions about Jalen Brown's senior year. Will benefit form the weight room. Was great at the All American bowl. He speed translated against top corners. Wouldn't be surprised if he outplays his ranking. Splitting hairs on him being a 5.

-16 WR in the top 100. Which is was you see in the first 100 picks in the NFL which is what they base it on..

-Shelton projected to play the X WR. Early 5* and very productive at Catholic. First time seeing him at UA game he needs more development. Doesn't think he will play early. Biggest strength is his size and speed combo. He can win the ball at the catch point.

-Ka'Morreun Pimpton got a huge bump into the top 150. One of the biggest risers due to his senior year. started 3* early on.

-Early Vandy commit and great find by Barton Simmons formerly of 247. Didn't have much production before transferring to North Crowley.

-Insane measurables. 36 inch arms. Longest arms of any prospect. He and Heard have the longest arms in 2023 class.

-Of all the pass catchers in this class he is top 3 when it comes to catch radius.

-Huge red zone talent and he will thrive there. Biggest thing to determine his ceiling. He could be the best TE in this class. It will come down to his lateral movement as a route runner.

-You see how Georgia is running three TE sets. Imagine LSU running that offense with these guys. PImpton is also a really great blocker and has toughness.

-Could be an in-line TE which could add another dimension to him overall. Should be fun to see him a year into the strength program. He has a late July birthday. Won't turn 18 until then. He could've been an 2024 kid. late birthday guys seem to rise later on in the process.

-Pimpton wasn't an easy flip from Vandy. He is an academic guy. Says a lot about LSU and the staff.

-Whit Weeks nearly made the top 100 by Charles. one of the biggest risers from the UA game. Great evaluation by LSU. Georgia looked at him.

-College coaches higher on him than the initial rankings when they came out. 3 phase football player who can do everything. Play speed is on the tape. Strong LB group at the UA game and Weeks was right there with all of them.

-Weeks was the best cover guy out of all them. Natural instincts and coverability.

-He will need to get stronger to be involved at the point of attack. Great frame to add on and instincts. Magnet to the ball. Many positives to draw from him. Give him a year in the program and can be multi year starter.

-Pick of the class who could shine and hit that could out perform their ranking. Charles says Dillion Carpenter. Under the radar aka late riser.

-Committed early to ULL and LSU knows their back yard better than anyone. Great frame and measurables. Should be able to add good weight. All region basketball player. Upside on the pass rush side.

-Another Ashton Stamps is interesting. Could be CB or S very versatile player. Potential S with his cover ability more likely a FS.

-Can't talk enough about the transfers. Great job in the portal. Aaron Anderson. Love the Deuce Chestnut pick up along with Denver Harris. If Denver is locked in he is a first round CB.

-Talent in BR is trending up. Expect a bump for 2024 in the class to sell the upcoming class off the SECW championship finish.

I think pimpton is going to end up being one of the top players in this lsu class. Super excited about him.

Love the part about how the college coaches were higher on him than the initial rankings were

That’s the part certain posters ignored. Not every prospect peaks in 10th grade. Some kids are maxed out by 12th grade and some kids are just scratching the surface of what they can be as players.

So glad this young man is getting recognized as one of top 10 linebackers in the nation. Proud to say I thought he was worthy of sunflower seeds and a king cake from the get go.
