the history of that family never seriously considering LSU
LSU had Josh Booty committed and Curly Hallman as the coach. Why would Peyton have considered LSU?

When Eli came out, LSU's 98 team had higher expectations than last year's team and finished 4-7. Also, guess who was trying to get out of his baseball contract and play football at LSU at the time of Eli's commitment to Ole Miss.

Archie Manning is from Mississippi and went to high school in Mississippi.

If I remember correctly, Archie was the last player signed in the Ole Miss class. When the class was signed, Johnny Vaught still had a scholarship and offered it to Archie.
Wonder why Charlie Mac didn't recruit him?
It was a few decades back, but I remember LSU's freshman team kicked the Ole Fr, led by Archie, by a wide margin.
The next two seasons Archie led Ole Miss to come back victories, late in the game, over the Tigers.
His Sr year, he broke his arm early in the season, but he was able to play vs LSU. We beat them bad that season.
It took a long time to forgive but I haven't forgotten.
Some will never forgive.

The next two seasons Archie led Ole Miss to come back victories, late in the game, over the Tigers.
For you youngsters -- Archie led the 26-23 victory in 1969 over the eventual 9-1 Tigers. That game cost them a Cotton Bowl bid for the National championship against Texas.
Despite a 9-1 record, Tigers did not participate in a bowl game after they were shut out of the Cotton Bowl and Sugar Bowl, and refusing overtures from the Bluebonnet, Gator and Peach bowls. That would not happen today
LSU hoped to appear in the Cotton Bowl, because the winner of the Texas-Arkansas game would be ranked no lower than No. 3 in the Associated Press poll, and quite possibly No. 1. However, when Notre Dame voted to participate in bowl games for the first time since 1924, the Cotton snapped up the Irish. The Sugar Bowl, peeved by a perceived snub from a school just 80 miles away, instead chose Ole Miss, which, despite beating LSU 26-23, was only 7-3.
As it turned out, Texas ascended to No. 1 after Ohio State lost 24-12 at Michigan. The Longhorns kept their top ranking by defeating archrivals Texas A&M 49-12 and Arkansas 15-14, then knocking off Notre Dame 21-17 in the Cotton Bowl.
