Another example of hyped 40 times

24. Orin Fontenot (LB), 6'2", 4.6, 240, Parkview Baptist. Fontenot is a good student, has good size and is a very aggressive player who I believe will sign with an SEC caliber school if he can get his 40 time down from 4.7 to 4.6
I laugh everytime I see a comment about 40 time. These kids lie so much about 40 times almost like their politicians. Does Don realize how fast 4.7 is for a kid that is around 6'1" and 230 (prolly the actual size of Fontenot) especially coming out high school? This is really a very good time for a kid that size who still has time to get faster. A 4.6 linebacker is special just look at Jon Zenon and Chevis Jackson running their 4.6s at the combine. Ali Highsmith and his famous 5 flat 40 is another example of how fast 4.7 is for a kid coming out of high school. Ali Highsmith listed 4.5 as his 40 time out of high school. The film of the high school games shows you how fast a player really is. If Fontenot can be 6'2" and 240 linebacker and run a 4.6 he better be ready for the NFL draft. By the way I like Dandy DOn and his column, but is just another example of how this process is over hyped. Look at all the 2-3 star players from this year and you will notice every single skill player runs a 4.5 forty or lower. All lineman run a sub 5.0 forty.

a friend of mine in high school who was faster than me and a better athlete ran a 4.7 and it totally changed my perception of 40 times. I laugh when i see the reported 40 times on the recruiting services

Guess you missed my post on this, very few kids run a true 4.4/40
These are a few quotes from the thread
quote:
Kenny Davidson. At the 1990 combine he measured 6'5" 270 and ran a 4.65 forty.
quote:
running 4.4 he is in the high 4.5 low 4.6s Not many kids run a true low 4.4 time. ...

That's what really boggled my mind when people said Michael Ford was slow for running a laser timed 4.56. Very few athletes pro or college actually run under a 4.5.

Fixed. Their is plenty of athletes in the NFL that have sub 4.5 speeds, its one reason players get bloated draft stock. College? Well that is a different story. Big time programs have a hard time having a bunch of people with sub 4.5 speed. Florida doesn't have as many as people probably think and they're a model of CFB speed.
Anyways, 40 times are incredibly overrated for LBs, unless you run a 5.0 flat like Highsmith. I can name a lot of great LBs in the NFL that have 4.6-4.7 speed. How often do you see LBs running in a straight line? Its more about lateral agility than 40 times with LBs, Highsmith had that. It does have some qualities in coverage obviously...but as long as you can stay with your guy in tight coverage for a few seconds, all that matters. Its less important for a LB in zone coverage defense. If a LB is covering longer than that, someone isn't doing their job. Jon Beason is a good example, I think he ran like a 4.65-4.7 at the combine and hes a monster LBer...I've seen that dude blanket Bush in coverage.

Fontenot is a legit 4.65-4.7 guy. Ran a 4.66 at the Army Combine and a 4.68 at the NUC combine.

You beat me to posting Loston'stats. I've noticed that he is credited with being at least reasonably fast and has good closing speed, but is only listed at 4.57 in the 40, which doesn't get mentioned in a negative light. If Loston is fast, then it certainly brings some other players' times into question.

cant believe people are just realizing this

He was injured at the time though.

a legit 4.5 is booking it. with that said the differences in 40 times can come from method (laser or stopwatch), surface (grass or track), and person behind the stop watch. when i worked as an assistant coach the head coach told me to have a quick finger...the fastest time was still something like a 4.55
on a laser that same kid would prob have been a 4.7 - 4.75. the kid goes bragging that he runs a 4.5 when he is nowhere close to it.

I noticed it some time ago; just was never motivated enough to start a thread about it.
edit to add: from what I understand, Loston is certainly fast, and wouldn't be the #1 safety prospect by most, if not all, services if his speed was a concern. My only point is that if he is fast, either his time is inaccurate, or it validates the opinion that other players manage to get arguably inflated 40 times listed.

I'm much more impressed with "game speed" than inflated forty times.
I'm sure all of us remember the days of high school sports; it seems like there was always a guy on every team who could FLY in a 40-yard dash but was useless in the games.
If you don't know how to use your speed, it's just another wasted tool.

Chris Webber?
Also 2 of the greatest running backs ever were in the 4.6 range in Faulk and Smith.
