You're not serious are you? I am happy to see you say this but did you read some of the stuff posted on BOL? They are packing kids' bags and talking shite. How's that "under fire"?

Bama will have to cut the scholarships of up to 15 current players.
If Bama does this to several players, they can count on their recruiting taking a hit from it. No HS coach likes to see one of his past players given a scholarship, only to have it revoked in a few years. Word will get out to these recruits will catch on to whats going on.

offering schollies and reneging and 'canceling' schollies to tide players will come back to haunt saban...
I think saban is very good and rivals the stoops, carrolls, miles and meyers but he is more myth than legend...
he has had some infamous failures... the utes in the sugar bowl, iowa in his last game as tiger head coach, louisiana - monroe last year, his tenure with the dolphins
in short, saban 'isn't all that,'... the longer he sticks around the more mortal he'll appear... and his treatment of tide players - whether his or shula's - will eventually make some noise in the media
it looks as though he'll have to pull offers this signing day - we'll see

I don't care how it all works out
Well that was the attitude some had when Albert Means wanted to go to Bama and you got zapped. Rest assured there is someone who does care and the NCAA will not treat you like its darling USC.
If Nick screws up you and every other Bama fan is screwed in the process.

I don't have the history with Saban that some of you do. Hell I didn't know anything about him until he came to Alabama. I do know that all the LSU people I know loved him when he was there. He got a nice ovation when Miami played The Saints in BR too. It wasn't until he came to 'Bama that you all hated him.
I can understand the "feeling betrayed" thing, but even that makes me think that you guys respect the man as a coach, and to some extent fear having him as a rival in your conference. If this is the case, I would think he'd be smart enough not to do stupid shite like reneging(sp) on scholarships, because you're right, it would have a negative effect on recruiting and his reputation with the high schools.
For those of you who are pissed off at what I typed, I will say that Miles has been an unhappy surprise to Alabama fans with his recruiting success. None of us thought he'd recruit worth a shite. Sucks for us. You guys are going to continue to be the toughest game on our schedule for years. Especially since Tennessee and Auburn will both suck for a few years.

Once one of the gumps shows up, they oughta be able to do an easy search on a premium site like the one available on TSD (it breaks down expected attrition by classes).
LINK
Wow, according to that link, Bama will have to "manage" away about 30 kids to get to 85. LSU on the other hand looks to be only about 5 over not counting transfers. 5 is a managable number but 30 is absurd. No way in hell that many kids will transfer on their own.

You take out Randle and Lacy (JUCO) and it's still 31. That's 63 recruits Alabama has signed in 2 years.
What they've done here, is hire the guy that used to do the luxury "tax" calculations for the Yankees. Apparently he's found a loophole in the NCAA regs that if you end up signing too many over, it generates a negative number of available scholarships, which allows more freedom of maneuver. Plus they are invoking the old, Bear-era codicil of "Bama can do whatever the f*ck Bama wants to do."

I didnt follow recruiting when Saban was here. Only started over the last few years. Can anyone tell me if he did the same thing when he started at LSU? If so, did he take a lot of heat for it?

"do bama fans not realize that when these kids get their scholarships taken away some of them cant afford to continue going to school there?"
What happens is Saban says to the Junior or Senior that Shula recruited, "you can either accept a medical hardship or lose your scholly".
I'm not saying I agree with it but the fact is that these kids will never see the field. They still get to go to school for free, they just aren't a part of the team any more.

correct me if im wrong but didnt saban get in trouble, well not really trouble, but didnt he burn a few bridges with high school coaches while recruiting for lsu because he was pulling schollies. i remember reading an article where one high school coach said its a lot easier and more pleasant and trustworthy to deal with miles than it was saban.

I just hope that one of those kids carries a digital recorder, like a pocket pen recorder, into his meeting with Saban when Saban tells him,
"Aight, now, here's the way this works. You will give up your athletic scholly and then transfer, or you are going to wish you were dead after each and every practice, aight? Got it?"
Then post that recording on a blog or something for every recruit to hear in the future.

Someone needs to sticky this at the top of the board for all recruits considering Bama.

Alot of those guys won't get into school. Just alot of sign and place prospects, but saban is doing the right thing. If he signs that many players he makes himself more visible to more players at different schools and in different states.

I'm hearing from Gump homers they are going to sign up to about 30 guys...how is this even possible without taking away schollies from current players? Unless they are having like 10 sign and place guys they are going to be in a serious shite storm of a numbers issue. I remember reading an article by a Gump a while back that said the numbers situation doesn't work without plenty of guys getting cut if they plan on signing as many as they want to.
Bama loses less players than WE DO this year and they are going to sign a lot more guys?
If this stuff is true this is very underhanded by Saban.

This may be true in the short term, but does it work in the long term? If he burns enough bridges, then recruits will be harder to find. Are there any examples of other schools that recruit year in /year out like this that maintain a strong base.
I don't see Carroll, Meyer, Stoops, Brown, Richt, or Tressell with overinflated numbers every year and yet they maintain great recruiting. If this was such a good strategy, why is it not used more?
