Since Kelvin Joseph is leaving I'm concerned about cornerback depth...out of Maurice Hampton ,Raydarious Jones ,Jay Ward and Cordale Flott ...which one do you feel is the best prospect ...could any step in and play this season if need be ...I figured the recruiting section would be the best place to get info ...thanks in advance

No way to tell at this point since they haven't taken the field yet for practice. People have been high on Raydar and Maurice was highly touted but who knows. We shall see when the pads come on who's up for it. I know people have blown up Stingley but i'm just telling you what I heard directly from Raymond and that is that "Sting is better as a freshman than Pat was."

We will be perfectly fine at DB for a loooonnnnggggg while! Stingley and Fulton no doubt starters this season. If one gets hurt, Mo Hampton could be that guy. He is a baller! Raydar Jones has been making big waves with his play. I trust either of those two. Also, Kary Vincent could slide over and in dire situation, you still have Mannie Netherley who has experience, but i'm not sure he wouldn't be jumped by Jay Ward and/or Flott by the time season starts. Mannie doesn't seem like a natural fit there! All in all, DBU is in good hands! (especially with Elias Ricks coming in next year)!

It'll be Ricks and Stingley for 2020 and 2021.
Filthy.
Filthy.

Would have been nice to have gotten Surtain in the boat. I'm a little concerned about depth this year. We might really end up needing to rely on some of those true freshmen and that's always a little scary.

Vincent - Jr.
Ward - Fr.
Fulton - Sr.
Stingley - Fr.
Flott - Fr.
Jones - Fr.
We were always going to count on stingley, but Vincent will be good in the slot as well

Raydarious Jones
Funny enough, he reminds me of Rashard Robinson with his length and wingspan. He has the fortunate gift of being able to get beat by a step or two and still make a play on the ball because of his length. Hopefully his life isn't quite as chaotic as Rashards has been off the field but he has a ton of potential and great physical tools to be an elite corner for years.

Cordale Flott
He will get playing time next year. His insticts and ability to play the ball in the air are outstanding.

Joseph was moving to safety anyways, he was never really a corner, just played there due to lack of depth last season. He struggled quite a bit at CB last year.
We brought in a TON of corners for this year so depth isn't really an issue any more.

Of the frosh after Stingley flott is the most ready this summer. He will play. The others should be good but will need a bit more time to be ready to be significant contributors

Derek Stingley Jr - True Freshman
I'm not scared.

Stingley is the best corner to come out of LA since I started really following LSU recruiting in '90.
And I don't hesitate to say it.

Right. He's awesome. I was referring to the true freshmen mentioned in the OP. I'm not worried in the slightest about Stingley.

Mike Detillier on Dandy's.
He seems to be really high on Raydar. I have seen where he compares him to Greedy.
LSU Football’s Signing Class, Part 1
You’ve got potential star players in Derek Stingley and Maurice Hamption, along with Marcel Brooks and RayDarious Jones.
Derek Stingley is arguably the best prep football player in the country and someone who can play and play quickly at cornerback and also help on special teams. It’s a lot to put on his plate, but he comes in with Patrick Peterson-type skills as a cornerback. That’s saying something. He’s a special person and player.
Maurice Hampton is a special player, too. I don’t know what will happen with him and Major League Baseball, but he’s a stud football player. He tracks the ball so quickly in flight. You can’t teach that. Either you have that ability or you don’t. And he’s got it. He’s a physical player who could play cornerback, in the nickel, and even free safety. And I’m not sure free safety is maybe not his best spot. That’s a huge pickup for LSU, if he doesn’t turn pro in baseball
Jay Ward is a long, very lean cover-corner with speed and catch-up recovery ability. What I like about him is his length and his ability to plant and drive hard to the football in flight. He’s a mentally tough young man and that’s important also to play cornerback.
I can say the same about RayDarious Jones. Excellent size and length and he spots and tracks the ball well in flight and he’s tough coming up the field in run defense. He’s a heck of a prospect.
Cordale Flatt is a very lean athlete who will need to add some weight and strength, but he can read and react quickly to what is happening out on the field vertically. He’s another athlete with quick feet and he can turn and run smoothly with receivers downfield.
The sleeper player, and he is really no sleeper, is Marcel Brooks. I think he is one of the best signees of this recruiting class and has some traits similar to Grant Delpit. He’s a long, very lean athlete; very intelligent, and you can move him around the football board. He just flashes up the field as a pass rusher and yet he can put that body in reverse so well and eat up so much ground out on the field. Brooks is a big-time prospect
along with Stingley and Hampton. And to be honest, with some technical upgrades RayDarious Jones is right there too. Great class after only landing Kelvin Joseph last spring.
Part 2: LSU’s Defensive Signees
landing top cover cornerbacks is the second hardest thing to find on defense. They got that this year with Derek, Cordale Flott and Raydarious Jones. And I think you can add Marcel Brooks to the secondary unit also.
Q: And just how big it was to bring Jones into the fold on signing day.
Mike: It was big to get both of them. You only signed one cornerback a year ago in Kelvin Joseph so you needed a talent influx and numbers there. This team puts an emphasis on cornerbacks with size and length and that is what you got in both Flott and Jones. Many times, LSU defensively wants that cornerback to play on an island one-one-one with wide receivers and what we are seeing today is a big flow of “king-sized” receivers hit the college ranks. You’ve got to match up downfield with them. Jones and Flott were huge gets for the Tigers. But look at all three cornerback prospects they landed. All three have size, ball skills and they are mentally and physically tough. That area at cornerback is the biggest haul of the 2019 class.
You can’t land them if you aren’t in the mix. You aren’t always going to get that player, but you make that strong effort. Just look at how it turned out for Raydarious Jones and Siaki Ika as out-of-state players.
LSU Newcomers Who Will Make the Biggest Impact
The two guys I’m interested to see develop in the summer are cornerback/nickel-back Maurice Hampton, Jr. – who looks now like he will play at LSU and not turn pro in baseball – and cornerback Raydarious Jones from Mississippi.
I have an SEC coaching friend of mine who swears in short order Jones will play and play a lot for the Tigers. He was recruiting him and didn’t land him, but he says Jones is the real deal at cornerback and with his size, long arms, recovery speed, and ability to play the ball in flight, LSU will not be able to keep him on the bench long.

Idk which would be best, but some people who are savvy evaluators were VERY high on Raydarious Jones.

Didn't he play qb in high school? Makes me wonder what kind of learning curve he will have as he transitions to corner

Remember this too. Pass rush, pass rush, pass rush.

No one is gonna mention Kary Vincent? Yes he’s a nickel back but he can play corner
Posted on 7/18/19 at 11:08 pm to TexasTiger24
heard Vincent was very FAST. Is that true?
Remember reading somewhere on the internet (it must be true) these last few weeks that Flott was the most impressive looking new DB, excluding Stingley of course.

Vincent has 4.3 or under 40 time. Insanely fast, wish they would have let him return punts last year....
