You couldn’t judge them last year and the did a hell of a job keeping a class together and closing out. The pieces they got have and will be the foundation going forward.

This year it’s still hard to compete with other staffs. These kids have been getting recruited for years now. And yes many of the staff have been recruiting players but it’s different when they are not at the same school sometimes. We still did damn good.

Next year’s class should be the class where we have had a chance to build the relationships early and close a big time class. We should have a complete class with no holes. It will be a big year.

I don't think we've done bad this year recruiting. We still got a month left to round out the class. We gotta change our expectations, or atleast switch our mindsets to this new recruiting landscape. We will not win every NIL battle. That's perfectly fine.

People have lost their ever-lovin' minds about this years class being good but not good enough. The arguments aren't even that difficult to dismantle either.

Claim #1) LSU failed miserably to address the defensive line situation.

Reality #1) LSU went national because there weren't any elite d linemen in the state this year, particularly interior guys. They ended up signing multiple elite edge guys including Womack who is likely in competition for a day 1 starting spot, and supplemented well already in the portal to address the interior.

Claim #2) LSU whiffed horribly at defensive back by losing ricks. Steeples and Kelly really dropped the ball at a critical position of need.

Reality #2) LSU scooped up four 4* high school db's and added a day one 5* starter in Denver Harris, not to mention multiple developmental prospects with high ceilings. And the portal work isn't done yet.

Claim #3) LSU is not adding the elite players that the Alabama's of the world are adding and won't be able to compete with them.

Reality #3) If LSU's class finished today, which we know it isn't done yet, they will have signed more 5* players than Georgia, Ohio State, Miami, & Oklahoma and tied with Texas.

Claim #4) Yeah but Saban has 7 five stars, LSU can't handle that.

Reality #4) This past season, Saban returned his most talented roster (on paper) that he has ever had at Alabama that included the Heisman trophy winner. LSU, with a patchwork roster, managed to beat that Alabama team.

Claim #5) LSU won't ever be dominant again unless they recruit in the top 3 every season.

Reality #5) LSU managed to develop the greatest team to ever play the game with classes that ranked #3, #7 & #15.

Point to all that is this, LSU signed a really really good class that isn't even finished yet. Lots of folks want to focus on what LSU didn't do this class (which isn't even complete yet), but let's look at what they did do.

*Signed a highly thought of Louisiana QB
*Replenished the RB room with the top two backs in the state.
*Reloaded the previously barren TE room with elite prospects
*Added to an already young but also salty, veteran offensive line with an elite o line haul.
* Pulled in an elite edge player in womack and also managed to sign the likes of J Howard while already replenishing depth through the portal on the interior.
*Finished with two young linebackers, one of which has rocketed up recruiting rankings all the way to a top 150 national player in w. weeks.
*Added a ton of young depth to a barren secondary that features elite players like Harris, Toviano & Jackson. There are also likely more additions to the group.

There's a ton to like about this class and what LSU was able to secure. Things are looking bright for the Tigers.

Great summary of the reality of 2023. Is anyone else surprised that the 24 list of legit power 5 contributors seems a bit down from previous years?

Deserves its own thread. Truly wish we can vet folks on this site and garner more perspectives like this, that actually provides solid insight and CONTEXT. Upvote for you brother. Anticipate 2024 class to finish in the top three as well with Simmons leading the way.

We will finish this year in the 4-6 range.

I'm comfortable judging him this year.

The hurdle that was just cleared is that competing coaches aren't going to be able to negatively recruit effectively against CBK and staff with the recent BAMA victory, top five ranking during a small portion of the season and still being ranked in the top 20 despite three conference losses. Clearly, CBK is a fine coaching "fit" at LSU. The strengthened relationships with LA HS coaches will only further solidify that reputation.

The offensive potential of this team is bright and pretty quickly becoming deep.

The final (smaller) hurdle is the ability to develop key players (what was done rather smoothly was putting together good developmental depth at TE) including significant developmental strides in the QB room.

Exactly. Having a #1 class doesn't mean anything if you don't have a plan to actually fill it with substance. Ask aTm. There were a few classes under Miles that I remember that weren't good in terms of rankings, but were really good striking a balance between need and filling the roster with talent and potential. That's what this class reminds me of, but it's better than those classes were.
