ZTR Engine - Which to choose?

I’m looking at getting a new zero turn mower this weekend. Looking at a Hustler Raptor XD or a Scag Freedom Z. I had a Honda on my old Hustler and it was great. Now I’m having to choose between a Kawasaki FR651(Hustler) and Kohler 7000 (Scag). What’s the boards opinion on these two engines?

I don't want to speak for the board, but most prefer the Kawasaki.

I had a kohler 35 on my scag it was fine but it was a cold starting somebitch

Buy the Kawasaki over that Kohler 7000. The Freedom Z is a beast of a mower and if they paired it with a Kawasaki it would be a HOMERUN! The Kohler 7000 leaves a lot to be desired and has had its shared of problems. The Kawasaki FR has been a very reliable engine with very few issues.

Have Kawasaki on my ZTR and had a Kohler on an older lawn tractor/ mower.

I've been happy with the Kawasaki FR651 on my Hustler Raptor LTD. I would choose that over the Kohler.
The Kawasaki's have become the gold standard for "pro-sumer" power equipment.

Scag has recently changed and they don't offer Kawasaki on a 48" Freedom Z. They have a new engine that they label as Scag, Kohler, and a Briggs (Vanguard). It sounds like the Hustler with the Kawasaki will be my choice.

Very pleased with my 42in deck Hustler raptor that has a Kohler engine. Make sure get it at a place that actually services their line of mowers. I get my mower tuned up once a year for about 180 bucks

I have a Cub Cadet with a Kohler 7000 22 HP. This is just my second season with it so not a lot of maint so far. One selling point to me is that the K7000 seemed to be pretty common along a lot of brands that I looked at and hence parts easily available. So far mine has run well and has a lot of power.
