So my yard has been taken over with crab grass and dallis grass. My yard is/should be st Augustine. After reading from here it seems I should nuke my yard with Celsius. Is that right? Then once killed hit with fertilizer?

TIA

Celsius is killing neither of those weeds. Certainty would likely be your best option I think.

Dallisgrass is very resilient. I've eradicated it before by repeatedly spot treating with roundup. I've found it's best to start on it early as possible in the season and repeatedly hit it with roundup until it's gone. One hit at the end of the season and it will likely come up from the root again next spring.

You know what you never hear about being overtaken or dying a fickle death? Crab grass and dallis grass.

I disagree. Certainty is GREAT for sedges (yellow/purple nutsedge) and kyllinga - I'd never use that for crabgrass or dallisgrass.

Depending on how bad the infestation is would determine next steps, but I've always used quinclorac for crabgrass and hand pulled dallis. Please note that quinclorac is not labeled for St. Aug, but if your yard is really all weeds, then maybe nuke it all with glyphosate and start over?

This is why St Aug sucks.
You need Quinclorac for crabgrass and St Aug can’t handle it.

If you care enough, Start over with Bermuda or zoysia.

If it’s 50% dallis/crabgrass start over. Repeated apps of Celsius will work on crabgrass but it won’t touch Dallisgrass. The msma that was suggested is illegal for residential use and it will kill St Aug so you just soon use glyphosate and start over.

This is a fun little tool to remove the unwanted grass. For stubborn weeds, do it after a rain.

The only thing that works on Dallisgrass is MSMA and it takes multiple treatments...but MSMA is only for golf courses and banned for residential use (that's what has to be said, wink wink). Otherwise you have to deal with it by cutting it low and never letting it get to seed head and then attacking it with pre-emergent. Or you dig it up...but even that isn't 100% because of the stolons in the ground.

Not many options for St Augustine. MSMA kills it but from what I've read it'll also kill St Aug. Great for Bermuda Lawns, though.

I've spot sprayed with glyphosate in the past, but you have to deal with ugly dead spots for a while.

I recently purchased some Recognition Herbicide ($$$). Combined with Fusilade II ($$) it kills bermudagrass and protects the St. Aug. So far it is working well on the bermudagrass and it is also hurting the dallisgrass pretty hard. I plan on doing another spray here soon and I'm hoping it finishes off the dallisgrass. From what I've read it should take care of it.

See this thread for more details.

Dallisgrass use MSMA or a combination of fuilsade 2, roundup, tricoyplr, and NSO. You have to paint it on the plant or else you will kill the surrounding grass

I'm running this as well trying to finally get rid of Bermuda. It's working but I can tell I'm going to need multiple applications throughout multiple years of this chemical. What are you doing to make st Augustine spread to take over the dead spot of Bermuda?
