I need a good garden hose. Don’t care what it costs. I’m tired of messing with these things. One leaves black all over my hands and the other is kinkier than Sasha. Whatcha got?

I've been eyeing Eley with one of their hose reels for a little while. I bought a set of their quick connects and hose end ball valve and they're great. $500 is a lot for a hose and hose reel though. I'm thinking I just need one with quick connects for every spigot.

Edit. I hate the hoses I have. Ironically the Never Kink brand is probably the worst I have for kinking.

I saw those reviews too. I guess if you plan on leaving it on damp ground it is something to consider, but I haven't had any signs of mold with normal use and hanging it up after.

I have 3 of the Flexzilla hoses and I’m happy with them. Kinking is minimal, pretty rare actually, and like you I’ve bought my share of “non-kinking” hoses in the past that kink worst than any old regular hose. As stated it is also true over time they will not keep their lime green color, I suppose because of staining by mold but as far as I’m concerned that’s only an aesthetic issue compared to the original. I’ll be happy to post a photo, new and older (3 years old), if you’d like.

Though I don’t own a full length Eley hose, a few months ago I bought one of their hose reels, 2 faucet ball valves, and one short 5 feet connector hose. Their products are not cheap but worth every penny - very high quality products. I would not think twice about buying one of their longer hoses, and probably will. I plan to to buy more Eley hose products, particularly their faucet end ball valves. Probably 1 or 2 more of their hose reels.

I recall there was a 3 or 4 page thread on the H&G on garden hoses in the past year - maybe someone bookmarked it and can post a link.

It really depends on what you are trying to solve for...there isn’t a silver bullet “perfect hose.”

You can usually solve for 2 of the 3 major issues of: kink, durability, or lightweight

Neverkink is a brand name with several different types of hoses under that name. If you are looking for a good hose, not perfect...a basic neverkink hose serves its purpose.

As far as that brand is concerned, the best non kinking / high quality hose is the Red Neverkink Contractor hose at Lowe’s. No kink, extremely durable but very heavy and will cost more than others.

The reason why it’s hard to solve for all 3 metrics is that kink resistant properties revolve around layers...more layers, more resistant to kink.

Flexilla is a decent hose, but yes - has a moldy residue over time and just like other hoses, susceptible to kinking.

Zero g hoses - they solve for lightweight and less kinking, but durability isn’t top notch. Most “pocket hoses” fall into this same category.

The old rubber hoses (true rubber) are good but as you said, can leave some of that material on your hands. They solve for durable and less kink, but largest customer complaint is weight.

I bought 3 black Craftsman all rubber hoses from Ace Hardware three years ago.

They are medium weight and are perfoming as expected, no black coming off on hands at this time.

I would buy again.

I bought one of those expandable water houses on amazon that was rated decently high and it’s lasted a good 3 years without any problems yet

Thread from just over a year ago.

My craftsman rubber hose has been going strong for over 10 years now. I don’t keep it outside as I store the hose reel in the garage.

I just bought an Ace “Premium” house and it seems good. But only a couple weeks on it now.

Eley products are supposedly pretty good. I bought their ridiculously priced hose reel, but it’s solid.

A buddy of mine has a corrugated metal hose. He also swears by it now. But again, limited use so far.

Thank you - I just pulled the trigger on the Eley products. 2 50ft and 1 25ft with 3 sets of quick connects. I hated the price, but I do feel like I’ll never have to think about this topic again.

Now all my hoses and reels are Eley. I bought 2 reels and 2 hoses 5 years ago and they are flawless. Recently I bought 3 more reels with hoses plus the nozzles and shut off valves. The only problem for me is the swivel shut off valve, its heavy, I prefer the regular one. One hose is 150' so I can water remote citrus trees.

The reels come either cart style or can be attached to house. I like to attach them to the house at a height where you don't need to bend down to reel them in. As you get older you can appreciate this.

Everything has a ten year warranty. Its sticker shock at first but these products are the best I have found.

I have an eley hose, sprayer, and quick connects. I think it’s probably the best you can get. For something cheaper the “colors” flexzilla hose is really nice. I’ve had mine for a while and it doesn’t seem to mold like the normal highlighter yellow hose. The reviews on Amazon reflect that. I have the brown mulch color.

All Eley. Sorry, didn’t mention that in my post. I’ll edit.

Ok since the OP has somewhat of a resolution and dropped some coin, I would like to ask a related question. I have several wall mounted hose reels. Previous homeowner installed them. They’re all several years old, but they were not cheap reels. The only issue is the o-rings. I’ve looked high and low for some guidance. Is there a typical o-ring size for the swivels in these reels?

Could you provide more description? O-Rings or the rubber washers? Don’t recall seeing o-rings on my reels.

The o-rings are inside the swivel. Different from the washers that are each threaded connection.

Since you’re going to have to take apart eventually to change it, can’t you just take it apart now and bring the pieces to a hardware store to find the match? Or better yet, look up the manual for the product online and see if there’s a schematic to tell you what the part is.
