re: Mulch Sale - Lowe’s & Home Depot

“they wait until everyone has planted and it stops selling, then they put it on sale.
you are a bit early so give it a few more weeks and after easter the sales will be out”

That’s not true. Mulch on sale is a loss leader (Lowe’s loses money when mulch is 5 for $10). It is the number one attaching item that drives a larger basket / average ticket. The 5 for $10 is a national promo, so the timing is based on when a majority of the country is ready to purchase…

Participation Trophies…

Posted by Tree 20 on 6/25/22 at 5:52 pm
I believe this once great nation started its downward spiral when we adopted that damn participation trophy strategy…

People today just don’t know how to lose…they’re not used to it. Temper tantrums when they lose…always saying “it’s different”…wanting a socialistic environment…entitlement of everything, including higher wages for work they don’t/can’t do…and the list goes on.

:spank:
If Rogan was smart, his next podcast should address the situation by playing the Biden clip, the Howard Stern Clip and black face and Trudeau black face then state if these three men step down, then he will follow suit. Until then, he will carry on…
To ask this question means you haven’t been paying attention…

AT - what are your thoughts on PRPO?
I had almost the exact same situation.

Bought house in 2012 for $275k.
Interest rate was 3.5%
Loan was for 30 years.

I just refinanced for 15 years (Rocket Mortgage)
Interest rate is 1.99%
Loan is for 15 years.

My note went up only $100 a month and I shaved 7 years off my note.

It's a no brainer for 15 yr...

re: Who loves their garden hose?

Posted by Tree 20 on 8/16/20 at 9:29 am to
It really depends on what you are trying to solve for...there isn’t a silver bullet “perfect hose.”

You can usually solve for 2 of the 3 major issues of: kink, durability, or lightweight

Neverkink is a brand name with several different types of hoses under that name. If you are looking for a good hose, not perfect...a basic neverkink hose serves its purpose.

As far as that brand is concerned, the best non kinking / high quality hose is the Red Neverkink Contractor hose at Lowe’s. No kink, extremely durable but very heavy and will cost more than others.

The reason why it’s hard to solve for all 3 metrics is that kink resistant properties revolve around layers...more layers, more resistant to kink.

Flexilla is a decent hose, but yes - has a moldy residue over time and just like other hoses, susceptible to kinking.

Zero g hoses - they solve for lightweight and less kinking, but durability isn’t top notch. Most “pocket hoses” fall into this same category.

The old rubber hoses (true rubber) are good but as you said, can leave some of that material on your hands. They solve for durable and less kink, but largest customer complaint is weight.

re: Baked ham

Spiral sliced ham. Put in an aluminum pan. Pour 1 can of coke over the ham. Cover the ham with 1lb of brown sugar. Cover the pan with aluminum foil. Preheat oven to 325 and cook at 10 minutes per lb.

Debone ham and lightly cover in cooking juices.

Living here a little more than 7 years...no regrets.

Funny, but fundamental difference between IB and me - I hate politics...usually stay off this board completely b/c it's so opinionated...but I thought I could add a little value to the conversation since tariffs have been a part of my life for several months now...it's added a TON of unwanted work on retailers...
quote:

Please stop talking to me about companies

Please give me a daily or monthly product and the exact increase in costs please

Lets analyze batteries

I buy batteries at costco for $15 that lasts me 6mnths. So i might have to pay 20 now so in one year thats a 10 increase so less then a dollar per month

Please continue with more examples

I'm not sure exactly what your are trying to prove here. The fact is that the tariffs will impact costs for consumers - the larger the %, the larger the impact and 25% is a large impact. The actual damage will vary and unfortunately like most policies - the true impact will be viewed from the Monday morning QB role several months from now...until then, the exact details will be foggy.

If you are looking for answers in daily commodities such as groceries, then I can't see the direct impact on milk, bread, or water. But all of those companies purchase items that are needed to run their factory and those costs will be passed on. You say to stop talking about companies, but it's relevant...b/c they provide you the goods.

I import for a major retailer.
Good.
Then perhaps you can answer the question I was asking:

Reports are the CPC has successfully mitigated many tariff effects at the 10% level. How much did Chinese glove wholesale pricing actually increase with the 10% tariff?

Results for the 10% varied by vendor. Some vendors were able to mitigate the 10% The Chinese government increased the VAT rebate for the factories and some vendors passed that on in costs; some did not. Gloves for instance, did not pass much on (high margin category), but we were fully aware of what the new cost would be for the 25% tariff.

So 4 dollars on a once a year purchase?

I want to know the cost on a daily or monthly product

This depends on the consumer...you may not purchase gloves but once a year but a contractor purchases on a monthly basis. That contractor will then pass on that to the consumer as well.

The glove example is one specific that was asked for. I can tell you that companies will raise retails for all products to absorb the larger increases. No one will be able to cite a very specific example unless you have insights to the retailer strategy. For example, you may pay 4-5% more on batteries to offset the 25% tariff on some major appliances.
I'll help him out. Gloves. You will pay ~20% - 25% more on any and all gloves b/c a majority of all gloves are manufactured in China. There are plenty more products...how do I know? I import for a major retailer. Just listen to the earnings calls this week...you'll hear all about it. The 25% tariffs are going to sting...and most companies will leverage raising average prices and not just the specific items that are directly tariff impacted. So, to better answer the question, most products will be affected and the individual retailer will decide which and how much...but let's be clear - these will 100% be passed on to the consumer.

Whether people align on the debate of Tariffs...Trump has one goal and one goal only: Pressure to move manufacturing out of China - why? less manufacturing reduces the GDP in China and hurts their economy. There are a myriad of reasons why he is doing it, but the goal is clear.

Side note, manufactures have been chasing lower wage rates for years. The expansion into Vietnam started a few years ago when Chinese wages started to rise. We strategically started sourcing from alternatives to keep prices down. Vietnamese wages were 1/10 of Chinese wages, so many companies began building the infrastructure years ago. India and believe it or not, Mexico/S. America are the newer hotbeds. If India could ever ship on time, they would be more of a force.
I can probably help here...I've been a big box buyer in L&G for several years...at Lowes (sorry HD fans)

"Flexible hoses" - the best you can buy for durability is the Zero G hose. Teknor Apex created this hose after the cheap pocket hoses failed to deliver on durability. The return rate on those cheap flexible hoses are ~40%. They don't kink but they will burst.

"Contractor hoses" - don't fall for the marketing gimmicks here...you get what you pay for...If you want a solid contractor hose...I was personally involved with the design of the Neverkink Contractor Hose. Its 75ft and price per foot the most expensive hose, but this was built for the contractor. Its red in color for safety reasons.

"Rubber hoses" - these are your most durable hoses b/c they are just a solid run of rubber. These are your old time traditional hoses. They haven't been as popular b/c people want light weight hoses and the rubber hoses are heavy. Lowes will be relaunching the old Craftsman Rubber hose this year - Black and Red (red for commercial hot water use)

"Vinyl hoses" - again here, you get what you pay for. Neverkink (made by Teknor Apex) has a few versions. At Lowe's you can get either the Neverkink regular hoses (black with a yellow stripe) or the Neverkink Max (another hose I worked on creating). The difference Is the Max has additional support for non-kinking.

Feel free to ask me any other questions on hoses...I can certainly help...

"What's wrong with giving a more qualified coach a chance?"

Nothing, but who has definitively said they want the job except Coach O? At this point, it's all speculation...and automatically ruling out someone that is winning before the interview process has even started is just part of a bad decision making process.

For the record, I am a Herman fan...And I'm ok with a Fisher...but both situations seem murky right now, so I'm saying at this point, Coach O could be given a chance...
