Shovel and bucket man. Will save you time and money if you are talking bulk removal. If only residual dust then sure a shop vac. That ash will plug up your filter fast.

Agree with this... the vacuum only after most of it is gone.

Shopvac will make an ash cloud in your living room. Then your wife will bring this crap up every time you want to start a home project. Then she will use it as an excuse to buy new furniture and rug. Ask me how i know

Shopvac’ed 1/2 a season of ashes out of my first homes fireplace, turned around when finished and it looked like Vesuvious had erupted in my living room. Who knew ash was finer than the vac’s filter. Never again; use a shovel and bucket.

There is a special Shop Vac for ash removal. Get one or don't do this.

Shop vac is fine, but buy the filter bags and you shouldn’t have to worry about blanketing your house with ash. I use my shoo vac with the filter bag for cleaning out my kamado joe and when sanding spackling and I’ve never had a dust cloud.

I just put my shop vac outside at the ash dump cleanout & ran the hose up through it and then took my broom and pushed the ash into the dump.

The only way you are going to use a shopvac for ash removal (applies to drywall dust too) is to set it up with a good filter bag, a HEPA cartridge filter, and a cyclonic dust separator. I have a dedicated harbor freight shopvac setup like this for my shop with an extra long 2" hose. I did similar with a small Rigid shopvac for my fiancee's home dental lab. I have an Oneida dust cyclone in my setup and a Home Depot version on the other and both work very well at trapping fine dust.
